我们正在吃饭，她迎面走来，坐在我对面，旁边陪着一位本地的中国女教授。会已经开
了一半，她是被请来的演讲人。
近距离地看，人显得很苍老，话不多，态度却很温和，甚至有一点羞怯，英语似乎不太
好，总像一边说一边在想词。虽然近在咫尺，我也没有搭话，不知道说什么。
下午第一个就是她讲。站在讲台上，她立刻变了个人。一回到科学里，她就完全自如了
。英语也完全变了，事实上我从没在理工科的国人里遇到英语如此好的，文科中也只见
过一个，口音很轻，吐词极其清晰，语调极其流畅，语法准确，而且用词还非常优雅。
不可思议，从生活话题到科学话题的转变，一般人的语言水准是倒过来的。
因为是有关探测手段的会，所以集中讲的是她发明（同时还有其他人独立发明）的那个
著名的单分子荧光方法，对于她这是很旧的东西了。这个技术本身虽然很聪明，且极有

没有啊。。。
不知道你对cryo EM了解吗，这个领域怎么样？我老板说cryo EM还不错，不过别做了几
年postdoc出来，成了一个专门使用cryo EM的technician。。。而且一般一个学校就一
个cryo EM，所以可能也是僧多粥少吧。。。
我现在感觉自己像个无头苍蝇，没有方向感。我在chicago，所以为了不和lg异地，就
想首先找附近学校的位置。问我老板说对方向有什么看法，他只说要找一个你可以
learn something的lab，可是我觉得这说了等于没说啊！可能我现在心态很功利，很多
人会说选择自己喜欢的，可我就想找一个容易找faculty的领域（说这句话大概要被很
多人拍死了。。。），我知道什么领域都不容易，可总有个相对度吧。
对了，你说“看看她们实验室屯的满满的中国人就知道了”，是说实验室中国人多不好
吗？显得老板push，方向差？ |

辣和热
辣和热在物理上完全不同，但是
为什么英文问食物有多辣（spicy），可以用多热（hot）？
原因是进食辣味物体时，人的口（和唇）可以同时有两种感觉：
辣和热；
不过，辣味并不提高口腔（或唇）的温度。
那么，为什么人同吃辣椒时会同时感到辣和热？
这一司空见惯的“常识”，其原因在1997年被揭开。
旧金山加州大学（UCSF）的David Julius教授，于1980年代在Richard Axel实验
室开始用当时算比较新的方法（表达克隆，expression cloning）寻找五羟色胺的受体
。十几年后，他继续用这一方法，改为寻找辣椒素（capsaicin）的受体，于1997年找
到了一个被辣椒素激活的蛋白质分子VR1，而且发现VR1还被加热所激活，因为辣椒素已
知与痛觉通路有关，所以这一工作，同时揭开了温度感受的机理（Caterina et al.,
1997）和痛觉的外周感受的部分机理，其中痛觉的研究当时还需后续实验（如Julius实

，有力支持了Cryo-EM的发明是一项配得上诺奖的工作，两三年之内也许就是今年Cryo-
EM就会获奖（大家可以猜猜Cryo-EM诺奖会花落谁家，会不会有华人分一瓢羹）。另外

发帖数: 237 | 7 radar的天线设计当然很重要拉，不过整个系统还包括其他电路，信号处理方面的，和
传统EM就不达噶了把。而且没有身份，想搞这些和军工有关的在美国还是比较困难的～～
GPS就和EM没有什么关系了把，好像应该搞算法，GIS那边的吧。和EM有些联系的就是接
受端的天线了，不过好像没有和一般的GSM,WIFI,WIMAX天线设计有什么不同。
其实EM还有的方向应该是EMC/EMI/ESD吧，kaka,好像也是经验为主。 |

了，难得空闲。在Labor Day假期时再写下过去4个月的OB经历，给自己一个了解，也给
考板的战友们一点借鉴。
OB并不如有些朋友想象的那么容易找。现在越来越多的教学医院不再接受OB的申请，
private practice则更没有动力来让人来shadow。如果打算走正规渠道的，建议及早申
请，不要等到CK/CS考完、申请即将开始之前才行动。至于非正规渠道，则是八仙过海
，各显神通，但也要及早积累关系。与我经历而言，四处碰壁之后，终于在一个

记住一条，EM这类方法，不属于概率论范畴，属于随机过程，因为它用了指示器（可参
考随机过程计算方法算法导论之类的），所以很难给出理论确界和最优解概率。一般说
无限趋近最优解。
在GMM条件下，倒是有人系统测试过EM的解和最优解有多远
另外MLE本来就没道理的，就是通俗说法的屁股决定脑袋。就算解出全局最优，对参数
估计也是imperfect solution，至于后续Wilk's theorem，也是asymptotic的，所以LZ
就别要求太高了
LZ这种情况，没法用时序或者频域作分析，用EM是比较理想的
靠，说了一堆，回头看发现对LZ没啥帮助，还是疑似我老马甲的YueJia讲得好 |

EM bond IMHO is to get a tempered way to gain EM exposure, I do not treat it
as bond but equity.
Tim, since you own PFUIX I have a question for you. I know all PIMCO funds holdings are very convoluted and they used a lot of derivatives in order to generate extra returns, I could be wrong but they hold 50% US mortgage and corporate bonds according to Morningstar, but its prospectus says it will hold at least 80% that are economicall... 阅读全帖 |

have VBMPX, but I do not want to be in treasury at this time so I use IRA to
carry the bond load. We also lack a dedicated EM fund in our 401k, since we
want to overweight EM and especially Asian EM, so the lack of it in 401k
creates a headache for us.
VTI has 0.05% ER if you want Total US market, PTTRX can be bought for $25K
in VG brokerage and $1K at Wells Fargo IRA, VWNAX is admiral class, $50K,

country/region's % of World GDP.
That said, IEMG (ishare core em etf) tracks MSCI EM IMI index which doesn't
include A-share. ER 0
.18%. It *almost* has total market exposure, tracking ~1900 out of ~2700
stocks in EM countries, vs VWO's ~1100 stocks... Good balance of expense and
diversification.

, as it has small cap exposure and limited EM exposure (20%). The expense
ratio is low as well. I think VEA would overlap with my existing holdings
in OAKIX, but thanks for mentioning this as the expense is so low!!
I probably would not buy any index-tracked ETF due to the concentration in
Asia. An alternative is to buy some actively managed ones. I somehow

A: 没啥技术难度，PM比较适合，工程师过去就是给其他部门打工的。做EM可能好点，
但也是脱离实战的EM，反正新人也别想做到EM，不太推荐，除非想拿股票。
U: 有点技术, 重要的是有技术需求，毕竟至少是个百万人在线大网游。每天也有很多
数据。
U有很多各大公司高级码工，但基础建设还是不太行。新人很拼命，强度比较
大。如果自己能力强，自信能够闯出一片天地，建议去。但是更适合工作1-2年的人过
去闯。毕竟做没做过industry对于在这种公司晋升实在太重要了。办事很注重方法。换
组不是很容易应该。
F: 选好组很关键，不过好在可以随便换。公司实在太大，进去搞不好就是个螺丝钉，
一定要树立正确的码工观。如果甘当螺丝钉的可以来。如果对自己能力自信，比如啥渣
代码几万行几万行都能啃，
看完就能改，改完就能有数据，有效果，遇到挫折还能换个法子继续前进的建议来。F
是一个有实力必然可以混出头的地方。很多人说什么一直写php，data pipeline，这些
都是对F不够了解。如果实力强大，什么代码库都能改，都能发挥自如，为你所用。

you who want to cancel the transaction, but the seller. I may be wrong, but
normally buyer will get the EM back if the seller is canceling the deal. as
for the wording, you are unable to do the inspection which is true and for
which the bank's statement is not too wrong. if you are the one who want to
cancel the deal based on inspection, you then should use the wording "not

loan you need, you will lose your EM. if your appraisal coming back low,
you will have either put more down to close it or withdraw but losing your
EM. these are just some possibilities for you. this is really hush. how much
EM are you going to put?
