看了看雪场的网站，record breaking snowfall
图片里半个广告牌子都埋了
但是政治家就是不肯说drought结束了
很多环保主义者觉得很恐慌，宣传了多年的“永久性” drought就这么结束了，这是打

就是居住環境問題。也曾有一人在ti工作十多年在Dallas, 部門也被関了。也因
drought 問題。很多房子的地基不行。唐人街很靜，店不多，食物一般。
在看房子上，可能是巧合。都是老人，要搬出Dallas的。但房子很新。有些區，房子前
後都有車道。不喜歡。

go read some studies, it is the winter drought that will have bigger
influence on disease, since drought is less favorable for the survival of

There is a special compendium "The compendium of Chinese Meteorological
records of the Last 3,000 years (Zhang 2004)." published recently. They
collected many types of climate related events from historical documents.
I read the last two volume (Qing Dynasty). There are a lot of records
regarding dust storm or dust wind. I didn't get time to look through Ming
Dynasty, but it looks like there are even more records regarding drought and
dust storm during Ming. |

下面的文章，“种子的践行”，是我今天从《科学美国人》2009-8上挖出来的，因为修
改书稿，发现草稿上引用了这个文件，却没有注出处，费了不少劲，才从豆丁网上找到
正本，却是严格的PDF版，不能抄贴，只好传给三千里外，在北京的儿子，请他帮忙打
下来。只过了不多时间，这个文件就在信箱里等着我了。
看到新老朋友每天都有上我博客来的，今天没有能力写新博文了，很不好意思。面对着
许多无言的期待，就允许我贴个洋文，有兴趣的朋友读读解个闷吧，我的无言的学生们
，今明两天不去网吧，读一读，试着翻译一次吧！
这篇编者的话，说的是美国转基因行业里发生的一件挺大的事情：孟山都等公司给科学
家立规矩，不许他们不经过公司的批准，擅自发表批评转基因科学和转基因技术的研究
报告，时间长达10年左右：一直到去年的8月，科学美国人发表这篇社评。在很长的时
间里，如果孟山都公司不喜欢哪个报告，那么它连同行评审的阶段都走不到。孟山都把
它手里掌握的知识产权——种子专利，当成了隔绝监督和科学批评的盾牌，用了10年，

美国经济大萧条饿死了多少人
这是一个争议很大的事情，笔者特意查了一下，数据变化很大，有人说饿死了800
万，有人说饿死了1200万，也有人说没有饿死人。相差太悬殊了。还有的说，说美国大
萧条饿死了人，是假新闻。还有人说，没有饿死人，只是外来移民美国的人减少了。于
是笔者还查了一下英文方面的资料，有700万的数字，也有1200万的数字（700万城市人
口，加上500万农村人口），还有的说不详。
