在烈治文市华裔居民经常光顾的公众市场，梯间发现的涂鸦中，有「中国佬」（Chink
）这个英文字。这字由来已久，由前清末期起，即被一些看不起华裔的西方社会人士用
作侮辱在西洋找生计的「卖猪仔」华人以至华工、华人店铺东主等，可说刻印着一段华
人受排斥的屈辱史。
约150年前，美国加州和加拿大卑诗省先后发现金矿。第一批华人1848年渡过太平洋抵
达「旧金山」（即今三藩市）附近淘金，希望一朝致富。但现实让他们大失所望，他们
只能在一些白人淘过并且放弃了的矿场淘金，成功机会渺茫；他们花尽金钱来到陌生地
，住在简陋房舍，生活窘迫；由于他们干的多是白人不愿做的工作，甚至因刻苦耐劳，
而被视为抢了一些白人饭碗，往往遭种族主义者贬称为「Chinaman」，饱受歧视、排斥
和压迫。那时候，开始出现了一大堆歧视华人名词，例如「Coolies」(苦力，即广府话
「咕喱」)、「Chink」(中国佬)、「Chinaman」(中国佬)、『Chinee』(中国小子)等。

comes to why the law is till there--in contrast, once a law is declared
invalid in any part of US, it disappears from law books.
You seem to misunderstand what I meant in the second posting. By politics, I
meant politics within Taiwan, not across the strait with China. I don't
give a damn about China. As I say, China may as well be in Mars.

climbing K2 or Mt Everest - there are risks, but I tried my best to minimize
the risk from accidents.
I agree this is one aspect of Chinee culture, that they consider the
concerns of friends and family, but it doesn't mean people that is doing the
adventure doesn't, but they just consider the risks and concerns and making
