To treat a flea- infested cat, a 3-step approach is recommended:
1. Treat with Capstar, a pill which kills fleas within an hour (lasts
only 24 hr). We use dog size Capstar (>25 lb). The dose is ¼ pill for
adults, and 1/8 pill for kittens.
2. Wait 30-60 minutes, then bathe the cat using a mild shampoo (NOT a “
flea” shampoo) to remove dead fleas and larvae.
3. Wait 24 hrs, then treat with a topical flea treatment- Frontline or
Advantage (must wait after bathing for the cat’s skin oils to be
replenished)
Maintenance
Monthly treatment may be needed, depending on whether the cat will be
exposed to untreated animals. Cats should be current on flea treatment (
within 3 wks) when going to the spay/neuter van.
How to deal with fleas in the home:
1. Keep all animals current with topical flea treatment. Capstar may also
be helpful to break the cycle.
2. Vacuum thoroughly and throw away the bag. Wash bedding.
3. Virbac “Knockout” spray may be helpful on carpet and upholstered

*Kittens < 8 wks should be given the smallest dose possible- around 0.1 to
0.15 ml of Frontline or Advantage
**Revolution must NOT be used on a cat being treated with ivermectin (ivomec
) for earmites. Wait one month after using either Revolution or ivermectin
