发帖数: 60 | 1 去年10月才买的房子，当时特别忙，就想说小院子就先晾着，来年春天再打理。于是没
有割草，浇水倒是有，最可悲的是前院的树叶没扫干净。对了，我们是6b区。结果就是
春天来了，院子荒了，我们也慌了。具体情况是这样子：
前院阳光是不错的，现在只有一点点绿意，绝大部分都是枯黄的。
后院有很多地方都比较阴，结果就是大片的各色moss，去年那些地方本来还是有草的。
有阳光的地方就好些，能看到一些新绿色，但是因为去年没有割草，还有很多很厚的枯
黄的草。
今天我们用rake把枯叶子，moss扒拉掉了大部分。moss被扒拉走的地方就露出了很多大
片的黑色泥土。
想问大家，这样的情况我们新手还能自己handle的来么？我们是准备马上先把土送去
test一下，但是接下来是该用fertilizer& weed prevent （好像也没啥好草了。。。
） 还是需要在去掉了moss的地方补种种子啊？我看了一些大家秋天种草的经验，准备
工作很多啊，什么roundup两轮，还有tilt，然后才种。看了很多帖子，可是还是一头
雾水，求大家建议！
如果找lawn care company来，一定能弄好么？我看我们邻居的草地也没有很好的样子
嘛。 |

Do you know what good grass you have?
For the bare patches exposed from removing the moss, do you have to plant
grass in those areas right now or you don't mind and you can wait till fall? |

没有好草的话会weed遍地。好草我们也不知道是哪种，不过昨天有拍照片，刚好麻烦大
侠看看吧～
还有个问题是怎么知道那些黄的像稻草模样的是死草还只是没绿的好草呢？昨天rake的
时候很怕把好草也rake掉。长moss的地方倒是一rake下去就整片掀起来露出土壤了。 |

However, the grass there is Bermudagrass (a warm season grass), and the ones
you showed is Kentucky Bluegrass (a cool season grass).
I suspect the brown grass is killed by the winter cold or some fungus. It
is yet to be seen whether the whole grass is killed, or only the top is
affected in which case the grass will re-grow from below. The already brown
part won't become green again. Wait for a few weeks or a month to see.
It is recommended to cut cool season grass to about 2.5" before winter
strikes to reduce the chance of snow mold.
If you can wait, the best time to plant cool season grass is in the fall,
with the second best time in the spring.
If you are willing to learn and commit the time and are also handy, you can
do much better than most lawn service companies. |

发帖数: 60 | 11 今天找了个越南人来看，他说前院黄的都是死的crabgrass，需要重新种new lawn,后院
的一半好些，reseeding就可以。后院长了很多moss的那块他说因为地势比较低，有积
水，而且还有大树在那，基本没什么办法。他说可以8月来做这些事情，总共800.
前院 till, reseed，后院aerating overseed，前院shrub trim ，种子种blue
Kentucky grass mix +shade sun
大家看靠谱么？如果我们自己做，till, aerating是不是都得去hd租机器来做？新手做
ok么？我们算一般handy的吧 |

发帖数: 2739 | 14 这么小的院子，自己整好了。 现在是最好的时间，租或者买一个tiller，前前后后来
回翻几次（一天够了），然后把所有的杂草，草根都耙走（一天够了），撒上草籽，再
把土耙平，浇水，齐活了。
看看下个星期GOOD Friday 后的天气预报，如果能下一，俩个星期的雨就更好了。
Good Friday 三天绰绰有余。200刀顶天了。

发帖数: 837 | 16 Different people my give different advice, which is normal. You are the
final judge and decision maker.
My recommendation would be this:
1. Do it yourself.
2. Renovate both the front and back yards in the fall, not now.
3. Do a soil test.
4. Do soil drainage and compaction tests.
5. Amend the soil from soil test results between now and the fall. It might
be laughable to do so before planting in the fall, but eventually you'll
realize that you have the final laugh.
6. [Optional] If you like to gain some experience or do something for fun,
just buy some crappy seeds from the big box stores, throw them down
somewhere you like in the spring while adding some starter fertilizer, water
them and see how they grow and compete with the weeds, with the thought
that all of them will be killed in the fall for new planting. No tillering,
no aeration whatever. You can also buy chemicals to kill weeds during this
time to gain some weeds handling experience.
7. Learn more about grass and renovation before fall. Especially decide
what grass you'd like to grow and buy quality seeds (not from the big box
stores).
8. When fall comes, you'll be in a pretty good position for a renovation.
8.1 Round up the yards for about 3 weeks. Since you have time, you can
probably do 4 weeks. 2 weeks is the minimal. Be careful not to spay on the
nearby trees.
8.2 I strongly recommend against tillering (i.e. not disturbing the soil),
and would also recommend against aeration unless absolutely necessary (e.g.
you are pretty sure that your soil is very compact). If you heed this
advice, not only will you save money, time, and laboring, but also you'll
have much less weed pressure later. Does it work by throwing down seeds
directly on the soil without tillering? Yes, it absolutely does.
8.3 Spread seeds and starter fertilizer and a thin layer of top soil or
compost or peat moss and water lightly a couple of times daily.
9. The next spring you'll need to put down a pre-emergent since you have
crabgrass history. Roundup and no-tillering won't do away with the
crabgrass seeds already in the soil.
There are more details to step 8, but by the time it comes, you'll probably
already know what those are. |

over seed可以么？
2.roundup 4个week是说做好几轮roundup，总时间差不多4个week么？
3.图片上其实还有一块地方没拍，地势比较低，大雨刚过还有积水，现在是几乎裸露的
泥土加上moss。那块地还靠近树，很阴。有什么措施需要采取来改善那块地的情况么？
如果秋天好好种下种子了，来年如果下雨了，还是会草都被冲走么？

发帖数: 837 | 18 1. It all depends on your expectations. Mine is probably a bit higher. If
by the end of the summer you feel like the grass in the backyard isn't that
bad, you can choose to do an overseeding in the fall. If there are a lot of
weeds and you don't like them, you can choose to do a renovation. For
overseeding, you may spend more time dealing with weeds before and
afterwards though.
2. Yes, the total time is 3-4 weeks. Something like applying Roundup,
watering and waiting for 2 weeks before another application, and watering
and waiting another 1-2 weeks for the final application before dropping the
seeds.
3. This is tougher. You may need to do a separate soil test for that area
and amend the soil accordingly (adding nutrients and adjusting the pH level)
. You may also want to check if the soil is really compact, and if so, you
may have no choice but do some aeration (to that area only). You may buy
some aeration tools and aerate the area manually, or just buy some grubbing
hoe or pickaxe and dig up the soil yourself (kind of like manual tillering).
In the meantime, top dress or mix in organic matter (compost or manures or
whatever) which really helps to loosen the soil overtime. If a spot is low
and can be raised by adding material, I'd add topsoil mixed with compost.
When planting, consider shade tolerant grasses like fine fescues. If grass
still can't grow properly after a few years even with your best effort, just
admit defeat and plant something else which may survive in that area.
4. If the grass has grown a season, it won't be washed away by rain.
However, if the area keeps being waterlogged, the grass may die because of
the lacking of oxygen in the root area. However, seeds on the ground might
be washed away by heavy rain if they are not covered. That's one reason it
is recommended to cover seeds with a thin layer of soil, compost, or peat
moss.
