I think planning a drought-tolerant yard is a great idea. I do think
dymondia would grow as you describe it, but remember, it does take water and
it grows slowly.
If you are really considering a xeroscape, a dry garden that will thrive no
matter what the drought conditions, here are some resources:
1. I would take pictures at the Huntington desert garden for ideas.
2. Most flat paving is done with decomposed granite and rolled out, then use
volcanic rocks,red or black, for texture.
You can see what is available at Central Valley Building Supplies on Van
Nuys Bl or Balboa Brick and Supply on Roscoe.
3. The most amazing rocks for decoration are at San Gabriel Nursery on San
Gabriel Bl. Many come from China and are called "philosopher's stones" (no
kidding)
4. The best place to look at the variety of desert plants is at California
Nursery Specialties on Saticoy in Reseda. This is a truly amazing place,
well worth visiting, and your boys will like the dinosaurs in front. They
may know some designers for desert gardens since they are a wholesale
supplier to professional landscapers and are only open to the public on Sat/
Sun
5. For drought tolerate native plants try Theodore Payne Foundation in
Sunland. |
