Pros: Easy service to use, works well and is accepted my many people.
Cons: Buyer protection isn't as great as they make it seem.
The Bottom Line: Do not think that you are protected when using their
service. Crooks cannot get your credit card numbers, but they can still get
your money.

I've recently closed down my paypal account. Why? I'll tell you, but first
let me tell you a little bit about me.
I've been on ebay for over 4 years, probably been with paypal about that
long as well. I'm a powerseller, with over 140 positive feedbacks both
buying and selling.
I've lost a total of $830 with paypal. I've found out from talking to their
not-so-helpful reps that I've spent over $15k with them over the last 4
years.
The first bad experience happened when I bought a $500 scooter from a
gentleman on ebay. I paid him in full, drove 3 hours down to him and then
waited around for 3 hours for him not to be home. When I got back home, I
filed a complaint with paypal. Long story short they decided in my favor and
attempted to return my money. However the person who I bought it from only
had $73 in his account. So that's all I got back from my $500. I contacted
paypal repeatedly but they said that's all they could recover and closed my
case. I had used money that was in my paypal balance from selling a few
items so I couldn't call up my credit card company.
The most-recent paypal screwing came just a few months ago. I bought a
laptop that was in pieces from ebay. The auction didn't specifically say
what model it was, but there was a stock photo. Lo and behold when I got the
laptop it was significantly different from the stock photo. The one I got
was the older model, which I already had and was looking to upgrade. The
seller wasn't cooperative, so I filed a complaint with ebay. The seller
replied back to my complaint and immediately escalated it to a claim,
preventing me from being able to reply back to his reply. Paypal never
contacted me or asked for any clarification. They went off of what two
different people wrote in one paragraph to make their decision. Their
decision, by the way, took a month to make. They found that the buyer did
not misrepresent the item.
Let me repeat myself, they never contacted me. I had offered to send them
pictures of what I had received to prove what I got wasn't what was pictured
. I wanted to help out in any way that I could to prove my point and they
didn't care or listen. I was raging mad, so I called them. The people were
pleasant but essentially useless. They said that the decision had been made
by whatever division does that and that there was nothing that could be done
about it.
I decided to do something about it. I called my credit card company (don't
ever use a check or a bank draft to pay for anything on paypal), to dispute
the claim. My bank did that, credited the money back to my account, but then
my paypal balance was showing as negative $230. When my next ebay fees bill
came around, I ended paying my ebay fees plus the $230 to bring my account
back to zero. I was going to fight it, but I had enough, said screw it and
shut down my account.
Paypal is great when it works and when you're dealing with responsible
people. I think they exaggerate the protection that you have with them. They
make it sound as if everything is safe and secure and that they'll refund
your money if you get screwed but that's simply not the case. I'm sad to see
paypal go. It's a pain in the butt to go and send money orders to everybody
. I've become exceedingly careful about who I deal with now, even moreso
than I was before.
A side annoyance. Don't ever use anything other than a credit card to
purchase anything using paypal. Your credit card has a lot more protection
with friendlier people to deal with. I'd imagine that paypal prefers you to
do a bank transfer as it costs them less-nothing, but that's just a guess on
my part. The annoying thing is that it automatically defaults to use your
checking account, and when you go to change it you get a popup screen saying
are you sure you want to do that with the "No" button bolded out as if it
was already selected. Why do they have to be sneaky about it? It's already a
bit of a hassle to change my payment method over already, now why try to
trick me?
Another annoyance. Paypal used to not charge you to receive money if a user
used money that was already in his paypal account, but now they do. I think
they're just getting greedy at this point. Any money that's already sitting
in paypal's coffer has already had all the credit card fees paid for, so why
charge the buyer again?
