Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer has apparently let slip the camera hardware
specifications of the iPhone 5.
...Sony does not currently supply Apple with camera sensors, with OmniVision
providing the CMOS for the current iPhone. Last November, Apple was tipped
to be using an 8-megapixel OmniVision sensor for the iPhone 5, though there
have been persistent rumors that Apple was looking to move away from the
supplier and to another source...

In a recent interview, Sony CEO Howard Stringer said that his company was
gearing up to supply Apple with a powerful 8 megapixel camera, most likely
for use in its forthcoming iPhone 5. | b**t

Shares of image sensor company OmniVision (OVTI) are getting clobbered
today on concerns that the company is losing market share with PC
manufacturers – and that it could lose its bid for the sensor slot in
the Apple (AAPL) iPhone 5 to Sony (SNE).
Citing those concerns, Baird analyst Tristan Gerra today repeated his
Neutral rating on the stock, while slashing his target price to $24,
from $34.
“Our field research points to Omnivision having lost significant
share in PCs as well as in China late last year due to its focus on
Apple, while its new 8 MP sensor may not be ready for the initial iPhone
5 launch, suggesting Sony could win all of initial iPhone 5 procurement
orders,” he writes, adding that “these factors create second-half
risks for Omnivision.”
OVTI reports earnings for the January quarter after the close of trading
tomorrow.
OVTI is down $2.68, or 10.5%, to $22.80.
