Ignore the doomsayers and those who miss their buttons, because it looks
like the Kinect is already a success. Microsoft is trumpeting sales of over
2.5 million units of the hardware worldwide in the past 25 days.
Bring on the marketing speak! "We are thrilled about the consumer response
to Kinect, and are working hard with our retail and manufacturing partners
to expedite production and shipments of Kinect to restock shelves as fast as
possible to keep up with demand," said Don Mattrick, president of the
Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "With sales already
exceeding two and a half million units in just 25 days, we are on pace to
reach our forecast of 5 million units sold to consumers this holiday."
The 2.5 million isn't the number shipped, and it isn't the number sold to
retailers—it's the number of Kinects that have actually been sold to gamers
. There doesn't seem to be anything dodgy about this number; Microsoft has
said that gamers want to wave their arms in front of their televisions, and
it has the sales to back that assertion up.
How is the Move doing? That's a good question, and Sony hedged its bets by
only saying it has shipped one million units in the first 30 days of
availability in North America, while 1.5 million units were sold in the
European Union... and this was back in October. How many of those were
actually sold to gamers, and where? That, we don't know.
The Kinect's success is good news for those who bought the hardware or are
looking for more exclusive games. The more units are in the hands of gamers,
the more developers will jump on board with original ideas. No more sports
