retailers tracked by TheStreet, 18 beat expectations, four missed and the
rest fell in-line.
Abercrombie & Fitch(ANF_) once again significantly topped expectations,
reporting a 13% surge in sales, compared with a much smaller forecast of a 3
.5% increase. Still, most of these can be attributed to significant
discounting at Abercrombie & Fitch, and analysts worry these price cuts will
eat into margins in the third quarter.
Shares of Abercrombie & Fitch are advancing 9.4% to $42.25 in morning
trading.
Elsewhere in the teen sector, Aeropostale(ARO_) and Buckle (BE) and American
Eagle Outfitters(AEO_) all posted surprise gains.
American Eagle upped its third-quarter outlook, and is now expecting
earnings in the range of 27 cents to 28 cents a share, from prior guidance
of 23 cents to 26 cents.
Zumiez(ZUMZ_) also raised its third-quarter outlook after reporting a 17%
spike in September same-store sales. The skate-inspired retailer raised
estimates to a range of 28 cents to 30 cents a share, from previous guidance
of 25 cents to 27 cents.
Off-pricers TJX(TJX_) and Ross Stores(ROST_) followed suit, revising their
outlooks for the current quarter. TJX is now forecasting earnings between 89
cents and 91 cents a share, while Ross is calling for income of 94 cents to
96 cents a share, from previous outlook of 79 cents to 83 cents. | K********g
