Since I brought this up, I'll be happy to start. I work at a venture capital

| n**a 发帖数: 41 | 4 Hi guys:
I've been participating in US smart grid standardization (NIST & IEEE) since
2009 and followed the development in China as well. It is indeed a very
promising and fascinating field. Hope to make friends and exchange ideas
here. | n**a 发帖数: 41 | 5 Hi Fatballs:
For lower layers (physical and MAC layer), a wide range of standards can be
used for smart meters. In the wireless domain, people have used 802.11/Wifi
, 802.15/Zigbee, GSM, 802.16/WiMAX and 3GPP/LTE. Powerline communications (
PLC) as a wireline technology can also be used to link smart meters with
utility gateway/server. As you can see, the specific technology to be
adopted not only depends on the topology requirement, but also on business
models. For instance, all major US wi | m*******d 发帖数: 104 | 6 Nyca, good points. What is the business opportunities, you believe, from the

Are you sure SSN really played with Zigbee? Do you know who are its
customers?
According NIST draft1.0, the standard of smart meter had been done in 2009,
but never found it out.
As you said, the deployment on lower layers might be either wire or wireless
, but eventually they must be approved in the standard, especially in China.
Hope to hear more from you.

| n**a 发帖数: 41 | 8 As far as I know, SSN initially played with Zigbee. Meanwhile, they are a
very vocal participant in 802.15.4g. Unlike TI and other vendors, SSN's 802
.15.4g PHY is not based on OFDM.
SSN has gained a fair amount of traction and you should be able to find
their customer information online. The rumor was that Cisco was thinking
about acquiring SSN last year. But SSN saw tremendous potential in itself
and hence opted out for an future IPO instead.
What "standard" of smart meters do you refer | n**a 发帖数: 41 | 9 Meanfield, this is pretty tricky. The reasons are the following
(1) Smart meters are not a regulated business. However, they are used in a
highly regulated business (i.e., utilities).
(2) Unlike consumer electronics, utilities do not expect to replace meters
every 2 years.
(3) Unlike iPhone, smart meters can not serve as a platform for further
innovation.
However, the home energy management platform could be a bright spot. That's
why MS and Google have both been trying to enter this market.

So, nobody is doing "labor work" like implementation of GIS, OMS, AMI, WMS
etc. and their integration?
Anyone agrees GIS is the repository that most utilities store their assets? | | | f******s 发帖数: 51 | 11 Thanks a lot.
The standard ought to be "Smart meter upgradeability standard" as NIST
mentioned.

| n**a 发帖数: 41 | 12 I am sure there are plenty of people working on GIS, OMS, AMI and WMS
implementation and integration. In fact, one major challenge in smart grid
is integration. Many innovations would come out of the integration process.
On the other hand, given the sheer number of existing underlying
technologies, it is still uncertain which one or ones of them will prevail
in the end. It may sound cliche. But this would be eventually decided by
the market and regulation.

| m*******d 发帖数: 104 | 13 Right. But I still doubt to what degree that consumer can accept the fact
that their homes are managed by software.
One of potentials is that, once the AMI and other smart infrastructures are
in place, huge amount of data will be poured into utilities, how to manage
data and then, how to get information from data will be unavoidable.
