Houston became the first major U.S. city to elect an openly gay mayor on
Saturday after a hotly contested run-
off election that gave gay and lesbian supporters a symbolic victory
following defeats over legalizing same-

Houston's new leader gets sworn in with budget on mind

In a private ceremony on Saturday, Annise Parker, 53, was sworn in as
Houston’s 61st mayor.
State District Judge Steven Kirkland, a longtime friend and former campaign
manager, administered the oath of office in front of a small group of Parker
’s family and friends.
Parker used her grandparents’ Bible. She plans to use the same one again at
