Tuesday turned out to be a good night for Notre Dame on avoiding the chaos o
f conference expansion in the NCAA.
The Pac-12 Conference announced late Tuesday it will not expand beyond 12 te
ams, meaning the Big 12 should stay intact for now. There was strong specula
tion that Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State would consider bolt
ing to form the Pac-16.Meanwhile, the remaining Big East football members me
t Tuesday night in New York City and the league says everyone is committed t
o staying together. With the departure of Syracuse and Pitt to the ACC, the
Big East is committed to adding more football members schools.
The Syracuse and Pitt move to the ACC could be a ways away. The Big East say
s it full intends to not release either school from the conference before th
e obligated 27 months. That means, neither school could start play in the AC
C until 2014.
On Tuesday, Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim said Notre Dame recently v
oted against a billion dollar deal for the Big East for football with ESPN e
ven though Notre Dame doesn't play football in the conference. Boeheim said
had the deal been approved, Syracuse and Pitt likely would have stayed in th
e conference.
Boeheim questioned why Notre Dame President Father John Jenkins was on the c
ommittee to vote on the Big East football deal.
“Yeah. I don’t know why that is," Boeheim told Mike Waters of the Syracuse
Post-Standard. "Why would he have a say on the football contract when they
don’t participate in it? If they really wanted to keep the Big East togethe
r they would have come in in football, then we wouldn’t be talking about th
is."
Whether or not the Big East will actually stay together as it currently exit
s remains to be seen. UConn and Rutgers seem like prime targets for the ACC
and would likely not turn down an invitation. West Virginia attempted to lea
ve over the last few days but was denied by multiple conferences.
Why is this all good for Notre Dame?
The Big East staying together obviously means Notre Dame has a home for its
non-football schools. That's a major factor.
The Pac 12 not expanding, the Big 12 staying together and the Big East stayi
ng together slows down the process of the possible four 16 team Super Confer
ences that many believe will one day happen.
The four 16 team Super Conferences could force Notre Dame's hand into finall
y joining in football if it wants to stay in the loop to play for a football
national championship.
But that doesn't appear to be happening.... yet.
For now.... the latest rounds of conference expansion appears to be settling
