1. real time rendering, to find a way to speed up the rendering process i
still a directionl. but personally, this kind of work don't have much
value since the hardware is going to more powerfull in a few years time.
2. Automatice Transfer function calculation. to calculate the trannsfer
fucntion by computer, because the transfer function are normally adjusted by
hand. Strongly suggest you to read something of Golden Kindlmann.
