In 1998, in the course of investigating sewage sludge issues a t anothe r
site, EHIB s t a f f recei ved
historic radiological monitoring data (1960-1969) for sewage treatment
plants in California [1].
The Sunol Sewage Tr e a tment Pl ant (SSTP) proc e s s ed wastes for the
City of Pleasanton until
1986, at which time the pl ant wa s shut down and then all flows (sewage)
went to the Dublin San
Ramon Services District (DSRSD). While reviewing these data, we observed
that the radiological
measurements taken from the SSTP appeared high, compa r ed to othe r
treatment plants in
California [1]. The e l eva t ed measurements appe a r to be due to
effluents which originated from
the Interstate Nuclear Laundry. The Interstate Nuc l e a r Laundry
service laundered clothing from
nuclear powe r plants and research facilities between the late 19S0s
through the early 1990's, and
discharged their effluents into the sanitary sewer system. The SSTP
deposited the processed
sewage sludge and effluents on the Bernal property for a:number of years
between the 1960s and
1970s. The Bernal property i s a proposed SOD-acre residential housing
development in the City of
Pleasanton, which i s borde r ed between Bernal A venue, Interstate 680,
and Sunol Boulevard. |
