abode in the Bay Area (read: 1500 square feet). Yet our public school's
education foundation requests about $1000/year/student to make up for the
shortfall in funds from the state. To those who haven't had kids in public
schools for a while/yet, did you know 1.) There are NO school nurses. I
learned this the hard way when my child got a concussion. He was sent to
the school secretary who gave him an icepack and called me. 2.) Parents
are constantly asked to help out, to make up for the lack of funds to pay
for "specialists." No more dropping off and going to work without a
complete guilt trip at not donating to the latest fundraising round 3.)
There are no cafeterias any more. Hot lunch has to be paid in advance and
is catered privately. 4.) P.E., art and music are considered "luxuries"
Why should this concern you? I never thought much of it either, until
through my assessor's office, I found that no more than three houses on my
street of 30 homes paid more than $1900 a year. Some paid as little as
$500. annually. I don't believe taxes like those keep up with cost of
police, fire, library, etc. Also, prop. 13 has a loophole that allows
parents to bequeath their homes to their children at the same property tax
