For x220, this is what you can get for $834.61:
i5-2520m (upgrade)

250gb hdd 7mm height (default) - you can get 7mm height 320gb 7200 rpm for
around $60.

If you don't use VMWare too much, than I recommend you get the default i5-
2410m for about $50 less. You'll end up paying $792 with all above. The main
difference between i5-2410m vs 2520m is that 2520m supports VT-d (directed
IO). It should help speed up things a little more in VMWare. Both cpu's do
support hardware virtualization, but 2410m just doesn't support VT-d. That's
the only reason I'm going for the 2520m. There's minor difference in GPU
clock speed as well, but since you won't be playing heavy games, I don't
think it'll make any difference. The clock speed increase also won't be
noticeable.
For x220t, this is what you can get for $1181:
i5-2520m (upgrade)

IPS multitouch screen (default)
4gb ram x 1 (change) - you can get 8gb for about $80.

For the x220t tablet, if you are thinking of getting 3 year warranty, you
can get a better deal by ordering pre-configured models from costcentral or
provantage for about $1300.
I ordered x220 with above configuration for my wife, and x220t from
costcentral for me. We are both engineering students and currently own x61s
and x61t.
