https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/
for over a year, and I can safely say that this is without doubt the most
affordable and reliable option for hosting small websites.
Even though NFSN don't advertise it this way, their NearlyFreeSpeech.NET:
https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/
is very similar to that of a cloud hosting service. The only difference is
that NFSN only charges pennies for what most cloud hosting services charge
dollars for. As of January 2011, the relevant fees for each site are:
Base charge: free for static sites (without PHP scripts), $0.01/day for
dynamic sites (with PHP scripts)
Bandwidth: $1.00/GB or less (NearlyFreeSpeech.NET:
https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/
gradually drops the rate to $0.20/GB as you use more bandwidth)
Storage: $0.01/megabyte-month
Memory: free 32MB included with each site, additional charges:

All 3 fees apply at the same time for each website. Since NFSN tracks your
spending in real-time, you don't ever pay a single cent more than you owe. (
Note that 1GB is defined as 1,073,741,824 bytes and a month is defined as 31
days. They don't cut corners.) If you aren't getting massive traffic to
your website or storing extremely large files, then your hosting costs
should be well below that of shared hosting services, like HostGator.
Although NFSN resells domains, you'd probably want to get them somewhere
cheaper. I recommend using Internetbs.net:
http://www.internetbs.net/
for the cheapest price with free private registration, or you can use the
$1.17 GoDaddy offer that pops up occasionally.
NFSN servers are extremely reliable. Since you pay for every bit of
bandwidth and storage you use, there isn't any incentive to offer you bad
uptime. One of my sites survived a denial-of-service attack last year for 24
hours without going down or slowing down, and the ordeal only cost me $2.
NFSN can handle Digg or any other surge of traffic without problems, and you
'll most likely recoup the bandwidth cost in ad revenue if your site isn't
being attacked.
Now, there is a catch.
To be able to make a profit while keeping themselves running, NFSN doesn't
offer free customer service. You have a choice of either using their forum:
https://members.nearlyfreespeech.net/forums/viewforum.php?f=1
for free support from the community, or paying NFSN for help. Fortunately,
their community is great and they also have a wiki:
https://members.nearlyfreespeech.net/wiki/
and an extended FAQ:
https://members.nearlyfreespeech.net/support/faq
to answer common questions. (You need to be logged in to access the forum,
wiki, and full FAQ.)
Also, the service is designed for the technically inclined, and you'll need
a FTP/SFTP client, like FileZilla:
http://filezilla-project.org/
, or a SSH client, like PuTTY:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/
, to upload your files.
NFSN's offerings are very simple, and more advanced features like cron
support are not available. MySQL is offered at $0.02/day for the first
process, plus $0.01/day for InnoDB support. NFSN's NearlyFreeSpeech.NET:
https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/
and configuration:
http://php5flex.nfshost.com/phpinfo.php
lists everything they offer.
If you can tolerate the drawbacks (the lack of direct support and advanced
features), then NearlyFreeSpeech.NET isn't for you. Otherwise, NSFN is an
exceptionally reliable low-cost option for hosting your website and you
might want to consider trying it out. (They offer $0.02 worth of service as
a "free trial.")
