San Francisco -- One man died and eight more were missing Monday, a day
after a boat carrying 28 American tourists, most of them Bay Area men on an
annual Fourth of July fishing trip in Mexico, capsized in the Gulf of
California, authorities said.
The U.S. Coast Guard and the Mexican navy were searching for survivors more
than 36 hours after a sudden, unexpected storm toppled the boat. The man
confirmed dead was American, but he has not been identified.
The 115-foot boat sank very quickly when it was struck by two waves about 2:
30 a.m. Sunday, survivors said.
There were 35 survivors: 16 crew members and 19 tourists, according to the U
.S. Coast Guard. They were reported to be in good condition, although many
were sunburned and dehydrated after spending 12 hours or more in the water
before being rescued.
Apparently, Mexican authorities did not realize there was an accident until
midday Sunday after the first survivors came to shore.
In the Bay Area, some families spent the Fourth of July waiting for word
from their husbands or fathers.
Novato man calls home
"Pete called last night and said he was OK, but he couldn't talk long. He
probably didn't want me to worry," said Jackie Zuger of Novato, whose
husband, Pete Zuger, was in the water for more than 15 hours. "But half an
hour later I heard from another wife what had happened, and I looked on the
Internet, and I thought, 'Oh my God, this is serious.'
"Pete, he's tough. But he's also 74," she said.
Among the missing was Russell Bautista, 59, whose wife was waiting with
family and friends at their home in Penngrove for any update on her husband.
Joelle Bautista said her husband, an avid fisherman in Bodega Bay, has gone
on the trip before.
"I was told that he did grab a life jacket" before the boat sank, Joelle
Bautista said. "But from what I heard, it was hard to hold on to them if you
were running. It's very hard to wait this through."
The boat, called the Erik, was carrying 44 men when it capsized about two
miles off shore, near Isla San Luis in the body of water that separates the
Baja California peninsula from the Mexico mainland. All of the crew members
survived, and as of late Monday, 19 of the tourists had either come to shore
on their own or been rescued, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Most of the tourists had driven last week from Northern California to San
Felipe, Mexico, a quiet town made popular by sportfishing enthusiasts. The
boat left from the Port of San Felipe on Saturday, heading out to sea for a
four-day fishing trip. Many of the tourists on board - including groups of
friends from the Bay Area - had gone on the same trip several times.
Tourists asleep
But before the men got a chance to fish, the sudden storm hit and at least
two large waves crashed over the boat and capsized it. Most of the tourists
were asleep at the time and barely had time to grab life jackets before they
were tossed into the water, said family members of the survivors. Most of
the survivors lost everything and were left without money, identification or
passports. "I'm relieved I'm alive, but I'm scared for the people who haven
't been found yet," said Michael Ng of Belmont, who was rescued with another
fisherman after they swam to shore while clinging to an ice chest.
Some of the men were able to make their way to secluded islands in the gulf,
while others floated in their life jackets or hung onto ice chests that had
been dumped into the water, said family members who had talked to survivors
. Some of the men had access to water and other beverages in the ice chests,
but most of the coolers were empty - they'd been meant to hold the fish the
men expected to catch.
"All he said last night was, 'Hey, it's me, the boat capsized, I'm OK,' "
said Theresa Beeler of Ripon, whose husband, Joseph Beeler, floated on an
ice chest with Pete Zuger while they waited to be rescued.
She said she found a photo of him on the Internet, sitting in a rescue
helicopter and looking exhausted and sunburned.
"It's a good thing I didn't see that first," she said with a relieved laugh.
When she talked to him a second time, "He said it was probably the scariest
time in his life. He really thought that was going to be the end of him."
