Crab Opener
Awesome! Stupendous! Incredible! Epic! These were some of the superlatives
used to describe the action on the crab opener on Saturday, both in quantity
and quality. The 2010 crab season lived up to its advance billing with
ports from Shelter Cove south to Monterey reported spectacular crabbing.
There were posters on websites trying to get fishermen to downgrade their
reports lest the commercial crabbers from Oregon and Washington use this
information to make their decision to make the run south. The reality is,
despite the efforts to silence the reports, the commercial fleet is on the
way.
Like all other ports crabbing was off the charts off Half Moon Bay with
private boaters pulling up limits of commercial grade crab on the opener
with reports of 20, 30 or more crabs caught in 150 to 250 feet of water from
Pedro Pt to off Matins beach. It wasn't a matter of if you got limits as
much as how many did you cull through to take limits of all jumbos. The
weather conditions were calm on Saturday but on Sunday 11-7 conditions were
a bit rougher, but Captain Tom Mattusch on the HuliCat was able to make it
out for limits of crab, but they didn’t run south of Pigeon for rockfishing
. Captain Kelly Sponsellar of the New Gravy was south of Pigeon on Sunday,
but we haven’t been able to ascertain (a big word that only means that
Peggy hasn't called us back yet) her score for the day.
The forecast this week calls for mixed conditions with chitty weather on
same days and decent weather on others. Take advantage of those weather
windows and don't venture out on those days that Ma Nature doesn't want you
to. Or just jump on with a party boat where safety is always the first
concern. There will be plenty of crabs to catch on the next weather window. |
