Since the first gamma-ray burst was spotted by government satellites in 1967,
scientists have puzzled over the cause of these fleeting but incredibly
powerful phenomena. Their befuddlement may now be over. A space telescope has
found clues in the afterglow of a distant gamma-ray burst that point to
