If US can not protect taiwan, what will japan and korea think? Do they think
US is capable of protecting them should there be a war?
They will deem US as a "paper tiger" and start developing their own
nuclear capability, and can start driving US out of the west pacific.
Either country can have nuclear capability within years, especially Japan.
And another round of VERY DANGEROUS arm race will develop with at least 6
