Matt
Friends come from afar. I feel sorrowful---a memory of the National Chiao
Tung University
Me and Xin Shengli:
I enrolled in 1997, studying for the master's degree under the mentoring of
Professor Wang Zhaoan and Professor Zhuo Fang. In the first semester, I took
English classes taught by Chinese teachers. Xin Shengli was a Belgian and a
foreign teacher. He had nothing to do with me. It is my cousin who brings
things together for me.
Shaanxi Province and Antwerp. Belgium cooperated to establish the Shaan'an
Foreign Language Center. The office is located in the Department of Foreign
Languages of Jiaotong University. Xin Shengli teaches at the Shaan'an Center
. In the spring of 1998, my cousin was preparing to go to the United States.
I recommended the Shaan’an Center to learn oral English. My cousin went to
the United States after taking a class. The remaining class time allowed me
to take the class instead of her, so as not to waste resources. In this way
, Xin Shengli became my first foreign teacher.
Xin Shengli’s humorous language and fluent Chinese benefited me a great
deal. The Shaan’an Center became a second classroom for me. Besides
participating in the activities of the research section, I was able to
mingle with classmates and younger undergraduates. The Shaan’an Center also
organized a spring trip to Zhongnan Mountain where we could breathe with
nature. Everyone was very happy. This also my first experience of positive
and happy teaching.
At this time, the new epidemic hit. I think of Xin Shengli and asked the
alumni office to contact him. Unfortunately, he had been away for many years
and I no longer had his contact information.
Matt meets Matt
One day at noon in June 1998, I went from the research office to the
cafeteria to have a meal. I passed by the science office and met a visiting
group of foreigners there. The tour guide's heartfelt words had the two
foreigners listening attentively. Seeing me passing by, they whispered to me
and asked me if I knew how to get to the Shaanxi Daily where they wanted to
purchase a T-shirt. As soon as we met, it seemed like we were old friends.
I promised to take him to Shaanxi Daily. That is how I met Matt.
In the afternoon of the next day, my good friend Xu Gang and Matt and I
cycled to the Shaanxi Daily together. The staff of the press was very
surprised and gave each of us a T-shirt. Later, I went to my uncle's house
and where I wanted to invite Matt to dinner. Uncle happily agreed. Matt also
happily accepted the invitation. He arrived with a two-litre bottle of Coke
. We persuaded him to eat but we learned that he only drinks Coke.
After I arrived in the UK, I realized that when Westerners are invited to
dinner, they often bring drinks and share them with the host. In addition,
they eat with knives and forks. Although we didn't understand the many
cultural differences at that time, we were connected with each other through
our gestures.
Soon Matt returned to America. Before returning, he asked if someone would
hand over to me the logo of the University of Illinois in the United States.
I took the logo home and inlaid it on my desk. I also used his name as my
English name.
The new epidemic also reminded me of him but he has not been contacted yet. | h***n
