I'm below the median account balance for Americans as well. It's just not
easy to deposit 401K on top of feeding the family.

match. I am above average in terms of tenure, but below average in terms of
age, because I start working late.

when the S&P 500 is 1400 rather than 1100. If adjusted the be index
changes, I might actually be about average (instead of below average) in
my 401K saving.
