南中国海（南海）的斯普拉特利群岛（南沙群岛）一直是很多国家的敏感点。

The Philippine’s claims over the islands begin with one man Tomas Cloma. He
was an established fisherman with an entreseneurial bent, who one day came
upon the islands and decided to establish his own country so very creatively
called Freedomland. This was done by issuing a manifesto entitled “Notice
to the Whole World” in which he laid claim to the territory on the date of
May 15 1956. In that he marked off the territory between his own lands and
the rest of the islands in the archipelago of the Spratly islands. The
Philippines government now uses this insane man’s distinction to mark their
claim to the islands, which they bought from Cloma for the equivalent of $0
.50 when he couldn’t defend his claim when the Chinese army rightfully
reclaimed what was always theirs.
菲律宾对这些岛屿的主权主张最早源于一个叫做托马斯·克洛玛（Tomas Cloma）的人

This one man has led to countless wasted efforts and resources from the
Chinese government in trying take back what was always. The Philippines
government, who bought the islands from a madman has continued shenanigans
that are equally ludicrous. In 1999, to reinforce their claim on the islands
, the Philippine government the deliberately grounded their warship Sierra
Madre into Ren’ai Reef. They refresh supplies and crew to the now rusted
ship every few months in order to keep their claim on the reef alive while
they have submitted their case to the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The
Hague. Their case lies on the fact that Renai Reef falls within the 200
nautical miles of Philippines exclusive economic zone. First of all, let’s
be sure that because the reef falls under the EEZ of Philippines does not
mean it belongs to Philippines – just that the Phillipines has access to
the resources of that zone – not the right to set-up military zones or
enforce laws. Secondly, China can also make the claim that the islands fall
within their continental shelf and thus “belong” to the China.

This clearly a game of cat and mouse. China has generously refrained from
reacting to such childish actions in order to prevent all out war – which
the Philippines has taken for cowardice.
