LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Nadya Suleman, who gained fame as "Octomom," has been
charged with welfare fraud for allegedly failing to report nearly $30,000
in earnings.
Suleman, the 38-year-old mother of 14 children, was not immediately taken
into custody. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office
, she was expected to appear in court Friday. The D.A.'s office said it
would ask that her bail be set at $25,000.
The complaint alleges that Suleman filed for public assistance in Lancaster
in January 2013, but she did not disclose that she was receiving checks for
personal appearances and residuals from videos. The extra income was not
reported between Jan. 1, 2013, and June 30, 2013, the complaint states.
Suleman was charged with one count of aid by misrepresentation and two
counts of perjury by false application. If convicted, she faces up to five
years and eight months in custody.
Suleman was already the mother of six children when she gave birth to
octuplets on Jan. 26, 2009. All 14 children were conceived through in vitro
fertility treatments. Her octuplets are the world's longest-surviving set.
Dr. Michael Kamrava, the fertility doctor who treated Suleman, had his
medical license revoked by the California Medical Board in 2011 after the
board found him to be grossly negligent in the care of three patients,
including Suleman.
The single mother has tried to support her family in a variety of ways,
including endorsing birth control for pets, making a pornographic video,
posing for semi-nude photo shoots and participating in celebrity boxing
matches.

Suleman appeared in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom with her attorney and
was released on her own recognizance. She is charged with one count of aid
by misrepresentation and two counts of perjury.
Prosecutors say Suleman was collecting public aid while hiding tens of
thousands of dollars in other income. Prosecutors say she filed for public
assistance in Lancaster last year, but failed to disclose that she had
earned about $30,000 from various appearances and residuals from videos.
Suleman allegedly collected more than $16,000 in public aid before
anonymous
tipsters alerted the Department of Public Social Services.
"We got several calls indicating, 'Well, she's getting money from elsewhere.
Did she tell you about that?' They did an investigation and they found out
she did not tell DPSS about the money that was coming in," said Deputy
District Attorney Bill Clark.
The county wants Suleman to pay back the $16,000.
Suleman is best known for giving birth to eight children back in 2009. In
all, the single mother has 14 children.
Suleman has struggled financially trying to care for the 14 kids. She lost
a
house to foreclosure and has earned money by appearing in a porn film,
dancing in a strip club and posing topless for various publications.
Suleman elected to go to early disposition court next month with the hopes
of working out a deal.
If convicted, Suleman could face up to five years in prison. The deputy D.A.
said he wouldn't expect a mother of 14 to be given such a harsh sentence. | r****a
