DULLES, Va. (ABC News/WJLA) - A child custody investigation led the FBI to
request that United Airlines Flight 897 bound for China return to Washington
Dulles International Airport Thursday, an FBI official told ABC News.

The flight, which left for Beijing shortly after noon, returned to Dulles
about five hours later after the FBI was alerted that a child on board was
allegedly being illegally taken out of the country by his mother, the
official said.
Once the flight returned, the child's mother was taken into custody for "
international parental kidnapping," according to the FBI. She's expected to
appear in federal court Friday afternoon.
The child was then reunited with its father. The child's grandmother, who
was also on the plane, was removed from the flight but not detained.
A statement from United said the plane returned to Dulles "at the request of
law enforcement."
The flight resumed, taking off at 7:47 p.m. ET from Dulles. It is scheduled
to arrive in Beijing around 9:30 p.m. local time.

Liu is a Chinese citizen and was married in Leesburg, Va. to the boy’s
father in 2007 and lived in various locations in Virginia. The boy, who has
dual United States and Chinese citizenship, was born in 2010 and the pair
divorced in 2013. The pair had joint legal custody of the child, and the
custody order said that neither party could travel with the child outside
the United States without written and notarized consent of the other party.
According to an affidavit by an FBI agent, Liu told the boy’s father in an
e-mail on Thursday morning that her grandmother was dying, so she and the
boy were flying back to China. The father told her the child could not go
because she would not be able to send him to school, and she e-mailed back
saying that she already booked the plane ticket and they were leaving
immediately, the court documents say. | c******n
