If any of you have samilar experience on taking in a student who switched
from another professor's group, please kindly read my story and give me some
suggestions. Thank you for your help in advance.

A first yr Ph.D. student wants to switch to my group. He wasn't happy with
his previous topic and his advisor was not satisfied about his work.
The first time, the student came to me and said his advisor knew that he was
talking with me about the transfer. I told him that my research interests
are not in that area and his area is promising so he should continue working
with his advisor on it.
I then talked with his advisor about this student. He is aware of the
student's talking with me and he said he is ok with the transfer. He said
he is not happy with him and he would be happy if he leaves. He advised me
to get the student a TA to see if it works out.

Then, the student came to my office again and almost begged me for a job
because otherwise he would lose financial aid. I was kind of soft and told
him I can seek a TA for him in Spring and we can find if it works - exactly
as what his advisor uggested.
But when I spoke with his advisor for the second time to confirm that he is
ok with the switch, I found him very unhappy about it. He seems to hope that
I reject the student's request. His contract with the student will be over
in weeks and then the student will lose financial aid and will have to go
back to his country. (Both the student and the advisor are not Chinese)
Looks to me this is a very serious punishment which will not work if I find
the student a way out. Ok, now there is a problem - I wrote an email to the
graduate school requesting a TA already.
Any suggestions for me to resolve the conflict? Thank you very very much!
Also, as a rule of thumb, if you don't want to find trouble, troubel will
find you. :-( |

发帖数: 11058 | 5 厚道厚道，不是所有发考题的水平都一样的。也不要对他们的期望太高，毕竟多数主要
是以研究为主，教课占的比重很低的，除非是teaching school。

发帖数: 8596 | 9 我就是觉得研究才需要英语啊，读文献review别人文章都要阅读能力，自己发paper写
proposal写不好发布处文章拿不到钱啊，会议上作报告说不好也不行啊
反正我写的东西每每被老板改的一片红，我就觉得我自己当不了他的角色。。。自卑的
