Bank of America Starts Mortgage Reduction Effort
Bank of America has started sending letters to thousands of homeowners in
the United States, offering to forgive a portion of the principal balance on
their mortgages by an average of $150,000 each.
The reduction for qualifying homeowners could amount to monthly savings of
up to 35 percent on mortgage payments, Bank of America said in a news
release on Monday evening.
The principal reduction offers from Bank of America Home Loans are the
result of a $25 billion settlement agreement earlier this year with 49 state
attorneys general as well as federal authorities who had been investigating
allegations of abuses over the handling of foreclosures.
“To the extent principal reduction and other modification tools help us
turn mortgages headed for possible foreclosure into long-term performing
loans, it will be positive for homeowners, mortgage investors and
communities,” Ron Sturzenegger, a legacy asset servicing executive, said in
the statement.
The bank said it planned to contact more than 200,000 homeowners who could
be candidates for the offers, sending letters to a majority of them by the
third quarter of this year.
To be eligible for the principal reductions, however, homeowners will have
to meet certain criteria, including: having a loan owned or serviced by Bank
of America; owing more on the mortgage than their property is worth; and
being at least 60 days behind on payments as of the end of January.
In the statement, the bank said it had started making such offers in March
to a narrower group of homeowners — those who were already in the process
of seeking mortgage modification. The bank estimated that the earlier wave
of trial reduction offers to about 5,000 people could amount to more than $
700 million in forgiven principal. But homeowners have to make at least
three timely payments for the reductions to become permanent.

what, for give 150,000 to decrease payment 35% . So their mortgage is about
450,000??
Too much debt, Too much house is the problem..Is that fair to the people who
have a smaller house with 150,000 total debt that they are making all
payments on???????
o
Rod E 3 hours ago
I would agree with that logic. People who bought a half million dollar house
on a $60K a year salary were just being foolish.
o
Colin 2 hours 46 minutes ago
I would say the folks who bought the smaller house should stop making
payments immediately...
o
none 1 hour 21 minutes ago
$450,000 is not too much debt. My husband and I make about $170,000 a year
combined. That's not too much debit for us (we paid $230,000 for our house,
because we liked it and it was available though).

I am waiting for a program (Government or otherwise) for all of us who
stayed in our old housed we could afford, did not borrow money we could not
pay back, saved money before making purchases, went to work and payed taxes
everyday, ............... Not much of a chance anyone cares about us.
o
Jack 3 hours ago
You will be waiting a long time. Don't you know that the US is a country
that punishes people who save their money and rewards those who spend that
which they don't have?

Dandy and Jack...You are both so right! I thought I was the only person who
felt this way. I bought a house that I could afford, and now I'm getting
shafted. Who thought sub-prime loans (people with bad credit) was a good
idea???

$150,000 AVERAGE principal reduction? That's the cost of my whole house...
I could have gotten more home, but I did the responsible thing and borrowed
within my means and paid my 20% down. Is there ANYONE out there who sees a
problem with this? Allowing deadbeats to stay in mansions (relatively
speaking) while I scrimp and save to stay current on my measily little
American dream???

We already did pay for it with the bail-out money that increased the deficit
that tax payers are still on the hook for. It's all a shell-game- and the
joke is on the tax payers. And, I hardly doubt this will help very many
people anyway, since most of the foreclosed properties occurred in the past
two years- not much help to those who already lost their homes. Can't wait
to see how the job market suddenly improves before November too- amazing
what can be done during an election/re-election year...did you notice how
much the gas prices have dropped recently too? Amazing!

And here I thought putting money down on a house and making extra principal
payments was a good idea. What a fool I am.

Carol • Minneapolis, Minnesota • 4 hours ago
Absolutely unbelievable. I have had a mortgage with BOA for a little over 5
years. When I got laid off two years ago, my monthly unemployment benefit
was $1200 a month. My mortgage payment was $1032 a month leaving me $168 a
month for food, utilites, assn dues, insurance and gas. Impossible. I asked
BOA for a mortgage modification to get me through. I filled out close to 30
forms and mailed them in. My answer from BOA was that since I had never
missed a payment, I didn't show any hardship! WT??? Now Harp 2 is introduced
. I am working again, thank goodness, and made it through with help from
family. I applied for Harp 2. I fit the criteria. Conventional mortgage, my
current interest rate is 6.225%, never missed a payment, am current on my
mortgage and my mortgage is with Freddie Mac. Guess what? I got rejected for
LACK OF CREDIT! I called and found out that I hadn't racked up enough debt
to show my ability to manage debt! I have made mortgage payments for over
five years, and have two credit cards with a small balance, and my three
credit scores are 760, 756 and 749! And I got rejected for lack of credit!
Maybe these lenders want us to act like our government and spend our way
silly!

PK • 5 hours ago
$150K AVERAGE REDUCTION? You can buy a house for that much.

1966 • 1 hour 18 minutes ago
So the lesson is that if you don't pay your mortgage you could get a break
but if you find a way to pay it you don't get a break. I am no fan of BofA
but this is ridiculous. I'll bet that half of these people getting a break
will be behind again in a year.

Willow™ • 1 hour 20 minutes ago
I was in this dark and seedy industry for 10 years. Here is what the article
DOESN'T tell you: 1) They will adjust your payment in most cases but NOT
your balance. 2) If they DO adjust your balance, guess what you are getting
January of the following year? a 1099 for 150K. 3) These ''adjustments''
reflect on your CREDIT as modifications and or settlements for less than the
original amount. Yup, a 20 - 30 year credit ding, depending on how long you
continue to pay. Banking is such a blood sucking industry. I'm glad I was
able to save my soul.

Lisa B • 1 hour 26 minutes ago
B of A can't be trusted. Don't believe this will be this simple. They would
never give up this kind of money without getting something in return. It's
easier for them to do this than to have to give actual money to pay the
settlement off. They aren't doing this out of the goodness of their hearts.

No sympothy • Olathe, Kansas • 4 hours ago
I was rewarded with my loan sold to another company! I paid my mortgage
every month before they bought it and screwed with it. Fought for over a
year with them to correct a problem they created and refused to fix!.. Got
threatened with foreclosure, was told that the problem was my fault, was
told that if I paid m mortgage on time I wouldn't be having problems.. I am
in my second home and after 20 years of payments I have never been late on
my mortgage until BOA took over my loan!.
This is more lies and despicable banking practices that the government
refused to see and take action against. BOA needs to be shut down!!!!!!!

Haasegust • 5 hours ago
Oh gee thanks! What about me the person that has NEVER been behind on
payments, as a matter of fact I am paid ahead. I live within my means and am
a not a greedy person.I have to pay for these L*$#%$ again?

Huge load of baloney. We have a mortgage with BoA and have never been late
on a payment. Why does someone get 2 months behind on their payments and get
what amounts to amnesty? Really disgusting that there are two sets of
standards in this country. Irresponsible people get breaks and bailouts.
Hardworking responsible people get tax increases.

This is more like a political show than really helping the economy. To some
degree, this action promotes the adverse effect of so called "strategical
defaulter", who can actually make the payment but choose not to, because all
of these foreclosure moratorium, loan modifications and now the BOA
mortgage reduction actions.

两个小mortgage和一个大mortgage应该一样吧?不过有租房估计也是negtive的。有个
公式算的,债务可以抵掉相当多的family contribution。他们家没债务,自己掏钱的
量就猛增。
