When you decide to pick a field, there are many factors
1. Your personal interest -- you have to be happy
doing what you do for many years to come;
2. The effectiveness of your advisor's network --
just check the performance of his/her ex-students;
3. LONG term prospects of the field -- sth hot right
now may be obsolete in a few years when you graduate.
BTW, EDA has the highest average salary in all EE fields :)
