PPI), which tracks inflation for manufacturers, rose 1.1% in June, above
economist expectations of 0.8% and up from May's 0.9% gain. In the 12 months
through June, the PPI increased 11.3%, in its largest increase since a
record 11.6% jump in March. Nearly 90% of June's increase was fueled by
rising prices for energy. Excluding food, energy, and trade services, prices
rose 0.3% in June, slowing slightly from May's 0.4% gain. It was up 6.4%
from a year ago, after rising 6.7% in May.
Separately, the Labor Department reported initial claims for state
unemployment benefits rose by 9,000 to 244,000 for the week ended July 9,
significantly more than the 235,000 economists anticipated. |
