在下文中就已经列出来了，他这么会吹的人。就是不大有。
哈佛数学系在丘当教授期间与普林数学系完全不能比。
单说数学界认可的顶级奖项，可能是我孤陋寡闻有遗漏，印象中，
哈佛博士生博士后教授中仅一两位菲尔兹，
其中一位实际上莫斯科大学培养出来的
由纽约州大石溪分校的大牛米尔诺(Fields, Wolf, Abel, NMS)作为权威首肯的；
另一位是由纽约州大石溪分校的大牛苏利文(Wolf, Abel, NMS)指导的、
（两大牛都是普林出来的）
一两位为Wolf其中一是丘自己、
好像没有阿贝尔奖。
就是普林数学系的一零头。
丘在哈佛期间的数学系不仅算不上丘说的全世界第一，
能在美国排第二就不错了（与伯克利数学比比？）。
还不说丘闹出的让哈佛蒙羞的庞家莱猜想的荣誉归属丑闻。
普林数学是当之无愧的美国第一，全世界第一，重大成果顶级奖项
校友成就比比皆是，有目共睹。它自己都从来没吹过全世界第一。

丘成桐教授早岁成名。长久以来，他是数学和物理多个领域的领袖。他思想深邃，技巧
高超。作为纯数学家，他是微分几何学的一代宗师。微分几何是研究曲线和曲面的学问
。丘氏因发明卡拉比-丘空间的数学结构而为世所知，这是弦论或所谓「万物理论」（
theory of everything）的基石。由于这些工作，他获得了不少奖项，其中包括菲尔兹
奖、美国国家科学奖、MacArthur 奖、Crafoord 奖、Veblen 奖、Wolf 奖等。
丘氏在哈佛数学系任教，已有 35 年之久。令人印象深刻的是他除教学和研究外，还曾
担任系主任，又创办了数学科学与应用中心 (CMSA)，并出任所长。今年是他在哈佛的
最后一年。临别之际，我们向他多年来为学生、同事及全球数学界所作的一切，谨致谢
忱。
1949 年，丘氏出生于中国广东汕头，成长于香港。他书香门第，兄弟姊妹八人，父亲
任教于大专，母亲则于图书馆工作。幼承庭训，丘氏自少即喜爱文史，尤其倾心于抽象
思维，这对他以后研习数学很有帮助。「中学时，我便对数学之美着迷，」丘回忆道。
「当时开始学习几何，这是多美的科目。而且，它还能应用于物理和工业。想到这里，
我禁不住热血沸腾了。」
他在中文大学念了三年数学，随后拿到奖学金，到加州大学柏克莱（Berkeley）分校深
造，并于 1969 年毕业。1970 年后期，他在研究上的一系列突破，造就了物理学弦论
的革命，也为他赢得了 1982 年的菲尔兹奖。1980 年丘氏成为普林斯顿高等研究院最
年轻的一位永久成员。曾任教于石溪纽约州立大学和史丹福大学。
早在 1979 年，哈佛便向他招手，Henry Rosovsky 院长尝试罗致丘至数学系。「这是
难得的机会，」丘回忆道。「哈佛有不少我仰慕的数学家，如广中平佑、John Tate、
Raoul Bott 等。我的工作亦受他们的影响。而且，听闻哈佛的学生也非常出色。」不

系不止保住了年度预算，甚至还增加了拨款，丘氏常以此自豪。2009 年，他为哈佛数
学系聘来了首位终身教职的女性教授，法国数学家 Sophie Morel。「我以数学系为荣
，」丘说。
2020 年，疫情蔓延全球，哈佛由面授改为遥距教学，丘氏请了一年的长假回到中国。
他在那里继续跟学生和同行合作，但同时也考虑提早退休。「我已经七十岁了，」他说
。「交棒新人，对数学系和哈佛都是好事。」丘氏在数学上奋力创新，在同样的理念的
驱动下，他决定退下来了。他对本系的发展功不可没，大批学生和同仁也借着和他交流
而得益。

写给哈佛大学数学科学与应用中心（CMSA）同事们的告别信
To my colleagues at CMSA,
I am writing with rather mixed feelings to all of you. I have been on the
faculty of Harvard’s Mathematics Department since 1987. I have witnessed
great accomplishments by our colleagues and our outstanding students.
Together, we have created new theorems and forged new directions in our
beloved subject. The whole world was watching what we accomplished. And, at
the same time, we were also proud to watch and learn from other parts of the
world through our annual event, Current Developments in Mathematics, where
great mathematicians are invited to present the latest and most exciting
ideas in our field.
The number of our faculty members in the Mathematics Department is not big
enough to lead all fields in mathematical science. And because that field
has been growing so rapidly, while interacting with many other disciplines
in science, technology, and the humanities, we felt an urgent need to create
a new center within Harvard to promote interdisciplinary ideas.
Eight years ago, with the blessing of the administration at Harvard, we
formed the Center of Mathematics Sciences and Applications (CMSA).Dean
Michael Smith, Dean Jeremy Bloxham, and Dean Nina Zipser have been our major
supporters in developing this interdisciplinary center from scratch, both
in terms of fundraising and finding an appropriate building space to house
the center. The board of CMSA has been extremely helpful. Irene Minder of
the Mathematics Department has provided tremendous and essential help. I am
grateful to all of them and many others I was unable to name here.
Colleagues from the Mathematics Department, Physics Department, Economics
Department, SEAS, and the Medical School have offered extremely strong and
generous supports to our scientific programs. Based on their help, we were
able to establish our brand name in a very short time—as well as
establishing an excellent and convivial atmosphere for research. I am proud
to say that our high-quality seminars have drawn attention from scholars all
over the world. Many of these international colleagues participate in our
programs, and important work in mathematics has stemmed from the ensuing
exchanges of ideas.
I am proud to have served as director for the past eight years, during which
time this center has really matured. I now believe it is time for me to
leave the responsibility of running the center to my successor. I am also
retiring from Harvard after 35 years of service. I am filled with memories
of the wonderful things that have happened in the department and in CMSA,
where I have spent practically every day, talking, and working with you and
other colleagues who are no longer at Harvard. I already miss all of you!
But my heart will always be with you. And I shall be ready to help CMSA and
the math department whenever l can be of assistance.

Michael Smith、Jeremy Bloxham、Nina Zipser 三位院长一直对成立跨学科中心大力
支持，他们不仅帮忙筹集资金，并为中心大楼选址花费心力。CMSA 的董事会克尽其职
，数学系行政和财务主任 Irene Minder 贡献良多。对于上述诸位，以及其他不及具名
人士，我一一铭感于心。
数学系、物理系、经济系、工程与应用科学学院、哈佛医学院皆大力支持，慷慨襄助本
中心举办的活动。正是由于他们的帮助，中心才能在极短的时间内声名鹊起，并且培养
出良好的研究氛围。我们主办的研讨班吸引了全球的学者，他们汇集于哈佛，切磋交流
，成就超卓，本人与有荣焉。

席，是卸下担子的时候了。我亦打算从哈佛退休。三十五年来，差不多每天都在这里上
班，和同事们谈天说地。他们有的早已离开，如今我也要走了，心中带着对数学系和
CMSA 的美好回忆。我会永远惦记你们。人之相知，贵在知心。未来 CMSA 和数学系需
要我效劳之处，我必义不容辞。

写给哈佛大学黑洞研究所（BHI）同仁的告别信

Dear colleagues，
After much struggles in my heart, I have finally concluded that it is best
for me to retire early. I have talked with the deans and I shall take the
retirement starting at the end of this month.
It was a good fortunate for me to be one of the PI of BHI starting at the
very beginning.Frankly speaking, when Andy recruited me to BHI, I was not
too optimistic about BHI. But I was clearly wrong! With the strong
leadership by all of you, it has become a great center in black hole physics
. I have been much more involved in CMSA and contributed very little to BHI.
I apologize for not putting more energy than I should, but the activities
in BHI and CMSA has many common interests as is witnessed by the vigorous
activities in the special program on mathematics of GR that is happening now.
While I feel guilty about it, I am also proud to be a member of BHI
management team. As I'm retiring from Harvard, I should not be in the
management team of BHI anymore, But I should still help BHI in the future if
asked.
It has been a great experience and it has helped my understanding of black
hole tremendously. I am grateful to all of you to give me this opportunity！

Dear Cliff,
As was just announced, I decided to retire by the end of April. I shall miss
all of my colleagues in Harvard and especially you , after 35 years in
Harvard and working together closely ! I have watched the great
accomplishments by you, Peter, Mike, Horng-Tzer and other colleagues. It was
exciting when a new result was found in our department and the whole world
was watching. Our students have been great and have been able to create the
most original works. Irene Minder and Anna Kreslavs have been great to work
with. I am grateful to all of you. Barry Mazur was the chairman to hire me.
I am grateful to that.
It was a great honor to be colleague with so many great mathematicians and
physicists in Harvard. Unfortunately, Raoul Bott, George Mackey and John
Tate passed away. Wilfried Schmid retired, but remained to be close friend.
Equally important are my colleagues Cumrun Vafa and Andy Strominger in the
physics Dept. I have gotten so much inspiration by talking and working with
them. They have changed the directions of my thinking in many directions.
If the Department of mathematics and physics and CMSA needs me, I shall
always be there to help.

there. The Center’s leadership transition plans are in progress. Dean
Stubbs and I understand how important a smooth transition will be and rest
assured that we are working hard toward that goal.
For now, you’ve certainly more than earned some time to rest! We are

大牛徒子学生Stephen Smale（他与哈佛没关系）拿菲尔兹34年之后，
大牛天才徒重孙William Thurston（他与哈佛没关系，
是Smale在伯克利的徒孙）拿菲尔兹18年之后，
而且Raoul H. Bott的方向与丘没关系，也比丘的方向更核心一点。
丘在哈佛数学系横行这么多年把哈佛数学弄成这样，
受益于冷战时代和后冷战时代的美国知识界科学界对
中国和中国人的友好期盼的大时代环境、
犹太学界大牛们对中国学人们的庇护、
美国和西欧学界大牛们对前苏、俄国和乌克兰学者的欺负打压。
（当然现在美国和西欧学界大牛们对前苏、俄国和乌克兰学者们
也不再欺负打压了，欺负没用，压不住。）
觉得丘对哈佛数学的贡献成绩最多能打55分。 |
