Generally, those two kinds of votes are roughly cancelled out by a dozen of
red states:
Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, ND, SD， NEB， Okla， Ark, La, Miss., and Ala.
Tenn, WV, and Ky could be used as their replacements.

Your explanation was quite good for this year, but couldn't explain the 2000
election, which was super close.
I was giving an alternative explanation. It may cover more elections,
certainly is still a poor one.
My point is
there is no simple explanation.
