Less than a month after the historic tech CEO hearings in Congress,
antitrust is back in the news. North Carolina-based Epic Games has sued
Apple after the tech giant kicked its immensely popular battle royale game
Fortnite off the App Store, effectively denying access to around a billion
iOS users.
The video game developer is being punished after it added an in-app payment
system that dodges Apple's processing system and 30% commission fee. Epic
says its option provides users a 20% reduction in prices and it is seeking
injunctive relief, according to the complaint, which details Apple's "
stranglehold on the iOS ecosystem." The company also launched an online #
FreeFortnite campaign to rally gamers to its cause and released a video
parodying Apple's iconic dystopian 1984 Macintosh ad. It looks like someone
was anticipating this. |
