As a former neocon, let me be the first to say, this is neocon bullshit.
China is not a “threat” to America. China is a competitor with America.
And competition is good! We should hope for the continued success of all
peoples, including the Chinese.
Intellectual property theft is a genuine concern. But words like “threat”
have no place in discussions on issues of trade. This is dangerous hyperbole
.
Might China make mistakes in the future? Even catastrophic ones that do lead
to conflict? Sure. But so might any superpower. Prepare for that
possibility with a strong military—and thus minimize its likelihood. But
don’t act like China is already an enemy when they aren’t.
