partner Peter Picknelly on Saturday offered to buy the Dr. Seuss mural that
has sparked controversy in recent days if the Springfield Museums removes it.
Dr. Seuss Enterprises on Thursday said it will remove the "And To Think That
I Saw It On Mulberry Street" mural from The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss
Museum after three authors complained that Theodor Geisel's artwork contains
a "jarring racial stereotype" of a traditionally-dressed Chinese man with
chopsticks.
"That's my ancestors coming to this country in the 1930s. We did not come
wearing Louis Vuitton and Gucci," Yee said. "Why do you want to change
history?"
Yee, whose father and mother emigrated from China to the United States and
established several successful restaurants, made the offer at a press
conference at his The Student Prince restaurant, which was attended by co-
owner Picknelly, and Mayor Domenic J. Sarno.
"This is political correctness gone insane," said Picknelly. "It's Mulberry
Street. It's part of Springfield. We are not going to lose this mural ... if
they are going to take it down, we will buy it."
Picknelly said he would find space in the restaurant, Union Station or other
suitable location.
"What are they going to do? Take it down an put it in a landfill," Yee added.
The mayor said he wants the mural to remain in the Dr. Seuss museum, but
applauded the offer from Yee and Picknelly as a means to preserve it in the
event Dr. Seuss Enterprises does not reverse its decision.
"We feel it should stay as is," Sarno said. "If not, we have the cavalry
with the Picknelly and Yee families saving another Springfield institution."
Yee and Picknelly revived the landmark Student Prince, a downtown
Springfield restaurant frequented by Geisel.
Authors Mo Willems, Mike Curato and Lisa Yee of Northampton, who signed a
letter to the Springfield Museums and posted it on social media, said they
found part of the mural "deeply hurtful."
Springfield Museums officials said they offered to meet with Willems, Curato
and Yee, but they declined.
The authors have since tweeted that they are willing to appear at a future
museum event in light of the decision to remove the mural.
Sarno said he believed the trio was engaged in self-promotion "or promoting
another entity."
Prior to the removal announcement on Thursday night by Dr. Seuss Enterprises
, Springfield Museums President Kay Simpson had written in a letter, "As a
museum, we do not alter or edit an artist's work."
Sarno has said he believed that Springfield Museums President Kay Simpson
was "put under the gun by Dr. Seuss Enterprises and they felt they had to
make a move on this."
"I believe Kay Simpson and the Board of Trustees are not happy with this
situation," Sarno said.
While Dr. Seuss Enterprises owns the intellectual rights to Geisel's works,
Sarno said he hoped the company would appreciate the wishes of the community
, adding that a great deal of local fund-raising went into the establishment
of the museum.
