Officers warn the restrictions will hurt U.S. efforts to prevent terrorist
attacks
BEIRUT—A cable circulating within the State Department to formally protest
President Donald Trump’s immigration and refugee ban has drawn heavy
support from career officers, who warn the visa restrictions will be
counterproductive to U.S. efforts to protect against terror attacks.
A State Department officer said the “dissent channel cable” has received
well over 100 signatures from mid to high level officials from Washington, D
.C. to diplomatic missions abroad. The cable is still in draft form and was
expected to be filed early this week after being circulated internally
within the State Department for signatures.
The draft of the dissent channel cable, reviewed by The Wall Street Journal,
says “this ban does not achieve its aims and will likely be
counterproductive” in the fight against terrorism and will instead “
immediately sour relations with these seven countries, as well as much of
the Muslim world.”
Mr. Trump signed an executive order last week to ban immigration from seven
Muslim-majority nations, an action he said aimed to protect the U.S. from
radical Islamists. The order also temporarily suspended the U.S.’s entire
refugee program.
