I want to share some of my thoughts with you about these election results,
because I love you and care for you, as my mom, as an immigrant, as a person
of color, and as a woman in this country. A trump presidency affects all of
us. The racism, sexim, misogyny, homophobia/transphobia, anti-disabled,
Islamophobia and religious intolerance, and hateful, bigoted language and
action that trump used, provoked, encouraged, and incited throughout his
campaign and political career have already affected everyone and will
continue to affect everyone, particularly the people that are directly
targeted by his words and actions - this is especially undocumented
immigrants, transgender and queer people, African-Americans - but also
people like you and me, Asian Americans and Asian immigrants, have been
devalued and degraded by trump and his ideals.
This prejudice and racism has existed long before trump, and will exist long
after him, but it is not a coincidence that people are feeling emboldened
to express that racism and hate - trump encourages it and spreads it, and
now that he has been elected as the next president, his behavior and
intolerance is affirmed, making people think it is okay to act in hateful
ways...
trump has shown throughout his campaign that he does not care about the
lives of people that are not like him who have been mistreated and oppressed
in this country throughout history, and has used fear to get people to turn
against others in order to gain power. Now he is saying that he will be a
president for all, and wants to unite the country - and I want to believe
him, but nothing he has ever done or said has shown me that he is telling
the truth, or that he understands the damage he has already done to so many
people's lives. I am so angry and upset that I have to live in a country
where the president does not respect who I am - he does not respect my body
or my rights as a woman, he does not respect my rights as a person of color,
he does not respect my immigrant heritage, he does not respect me or
millions of Americans that he claims he will serve as president. So I want
to believe him, Mama, I really do, because I do want this country to be
unified and work together, but I want him to show Americans that he will
change and that he will work to serve and repair relations with the
Americans he has insulted and demeaned. I want him to earn our respect and
show that he deserves to be our president, a president for all Americans and
not just the ones that look like him - then, and only then, can I call him
my president.
Until then, I will continue to fight so that my rights, our rights, and the
rights of people who have been oppressed and underserved - can be heard. I
am sorry Mama, that the next president does not deserve us. I will work
throughout my life to make this better for you, for us. I love you Mama.

This has never been about politics.
This is not about one candidate over the other.
It’s not about one’s ideas over another’s.
It is not blue vs. red.
It’s not her emails vs. his bad language.
It’s not her dishonesty vs. his indecency.
It’s about overt racism and hostility toward minorities.
It’s about religion being weaponized.
It’s about crassness and vulgarity and disregard for women.
It’s about a barricaded, militarized, bully nation.
It’s about an unapologetic, open-faced ugliness.
And it is not only that these things have been ratified by our nation that
grieve us; all this hatred, fear, racism, bigotry, and intolerance—it’s
knowing that these things have been amen-ed by our neighbors, our families,
our friends, those we work with and worship alongside. That is the most
horrific thing of all. We now know how close this is.
It feels like living in enemy territory being here now, and there’s no way
around that. We wake up today in a home we no longer recognize. We are
grieving the loss of a place we used to love but no longer do. This may be
America today but it is not the America we believe in or recognize or want.
This is not about a difference of political opinion, as that’s far too
small to mourn over. It’s about a fundamental difference in how we view the
worth of all people—not just those who look or talk or think or vote the
way we do.
Grief always laments what might have been, the future we were robbed of, the
tomorrow that we won’t get to see, and that is what we walk through today.
As a nation we had an opportunity to affirm the beauty of our diversity
this day, to choose ideas over sound bytes, to let everyone know they had a
place at the table, to be the beacon of goodness and decency we imagine that
we are—and we said no. Every horrible thing Donald Trump ever said about
women or Muslims or people of color has now been validated.
Every profanity-laced press conference and every call to bully protestors
and every ignorant diatribe has been endorsed.
Half of our country has declared these things acceptable, noble, American.
This is the disconnect and the source of our grief today. It isn’t a
political defeat that we’re lamenting, it’s a defeat for Humanity.
We’re not angry that our candidate lost. We’re angry because our candidate
’s losing means this country will be less safe, less kind, and less
available to a huge segment of its population, and that’s just the truth.

“But when we try to voice these concerns and desires we are called racist
because the person we disagree with is black. We are called sexist because
the person we disagree with is a woman. We are called homophobic for saying
there are bigger priorities for the President than deciding who uses what
bathroom. We are called Islamophobic for expecting our ultra-powerful
military and police might to be able to provide us security. We are called
rednecks, and fools, and morons, all because we disagree.”
