In 2012, Mitt Romney began in April raising $100 million per month,
according to his former top strategist Stuart Stevens. As a general election
candidate, roughly 60 percent of Romney’s time was spent fundraising.
Trump told the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday that he plans to build “a
world-class finance organization.”
If Trump is to accelerate to this speed, he will need to make up a lot of
ground. Whereas Romney had established relationships with donors throughout
the 2012 primary election, and before that in his 2008 bid for president,
Trump has mostly propelled his campaign with his own money. In a general
election, he has suggested he does not have the appetite to self-fund, nor
would such a strategy necessarily strengthen party. |
