Former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, an American lawyer and Democratic
Party politician from New York, who rose to become Speaker of the New York
State Assembly in 1994, was found guilty on all seven counts of his federal
indictment by a jury Monday afternoon. The guilty verdict is a stunning end
to the career of one of the most powerful people in New York government. The
Manhattan Democrat was the speaker of the Assembly for more than 20 years.
After the three-week trial, the jury came back Monday afternoon that he was
guilty on all counts.
"Today, Sheldon Silver got justice, and at long last, so did the people of
New York," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.
Silver, 71, was convicted of pocketing $4 million in bribes and kickbacks
that were disguised as legal payments from law firms specializing in real
estate and asbestos claims.
He faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced.
Silver was found guilty of two counts each of mail fraud, wire fraud and
extortion, as well as a single money-laundering charge. All are felonies.
With his conviction, Silver is automatically ejected from the state
Legislature, where he's been a member since 1977. He first became speaker in
1994. |
