At least 11 people have died and 14 others have been wounded in separate
shootings in Chicago since late Tuesday, including the accidental shooting
of an 11-year-old boy, police said.
In the latest fatal shooting, a 39-year-old man was killed and a 52-year-old
man was wounded in a shooting around 5:10 a.m. Thursday in the Bronzeville
neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police
Department spokeswoman.
The two were inside a building in the 4700 block of South King Drive when
they were shot.
The 39-year-old was struck in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene,
Sedevic said.
The other man, wounded in the left knee and shin, was taken in fair
condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
About 11:35 p.m. Wednesday, a 23-year-old man was shot to death in the South
Austin neighborhood on the West Side, said Officer Ron Gaines, a police
spokesman.
The man, identified as Dan Rance, was standing outside in the 700 block of
North Long Avenue, the same block he lived on, when a gunman walked up and
fired, striking him in the chest and torso, according to police and the Cook
County medical examiner's office.
Rance was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park where he was
later pronounced dead at 11:50 p.m., police and the medical examiner's
officer said.
About 9:45 p.m., a 19-year-old man died after he was shot in the Englewood
neighborhood on the South Side, police said.
The man, identified as Jimmy Tripp of the 7300 block of South Emerald Avenue
, was outside in the 800 block of West 68th Street when an attacker walked
up and fired shots, according to the medical examiner and Officer Amina
Greer, a police spokeswoman.
The man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Advocate Christ
Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition. He was later pronounced
dead at the hospital at 10:33 p.m., according to the medical examiner's
office.
About 9:05 p.m., a 60-year-old man was shot to death in the South Shore
neighborhood on the South Side, Gaines said.
The man was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head in a hallway inside
a residence in the 6800 block of South Merrill Avenue, Gaines said.
The shooting may have been narcotics-related, Gaines said.
No one was in custody as of early Thursday and no other information was
immediately available.
About five minutes earlier, at 9 p.m., an 11-year-old boy died after a
family member accidentally shot him in the abdomen in the Park Manor
neighborhood on the South Side, according to police and the boy's family.
The boy, identified by family members as Antwone Earl Price Jr., was in the
7400 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue when he was shot.
He was taken to Comer Children's Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said one person is in custody as a result of the shooting.
Earlier, a 19-year-old man was pronounced dead after he and two other men
were shot in the 5900 block of West Diversey Avenue at 5:30 p.m. in the
Belmont Central neighborhood, police said.
The man, 19, identified as Daniel Guerra of the 2100 block of North McVicker
Avenue, was shot in the upper chest and neck and taken to Advocate Illinois
Masonic Medical Center, where he had initially been listed in critical
condition, according to police and the medical examiner's office.
Authorities initially gave a different age for the man and where he was
injured.
Guerra, was pronounced dead at 6:03 p.m., according to the medical examiner'
s office.
The man was with a 23-year-old man who was shot in the back and taken in
critical condition to Illinois Masonic. A man, 22, was shot in the hand and
was taken to an area hospital, where his condition had stabilized, police
said.
The string of slayings began shortly before midnight Tuesday when a 16-year-
old boy was killed in the Lawndale neighborhood, police said. About a half-
hour later and about 3 miles away, a 25-year-old man was killed. Two hours
later in Uptown, two men were killed.
The 16-year-old boy was slain and a woman, 42, and a girl, 14, were wounded
in the 1300 block of South Kostner Avenue about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday.
The boy was identified Wednesday afternoon as Marcus Weathers, according to
the Cook County medical examiner's office. He lived in the same block where
he was killed.
Someone in a white sedan drove by and opened fire, hitting the three, police
said. All the victims were taken to Stroger Hospital. The 42-year-old was
shot in the leg and the 14-year-old in the back. Their conditions were
stabilized, authorities said.
A 25-year-old man was fatally shot in the 2700 block of West Lexington
Avenue about 12:20 a.m. He was shot in the head, chest and groin and
pronounced dead at the scene. No one was in custody.
Then at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, two men were shot to death in the Uptown
neighborhood, police said. A 34-year-old man was pronounced dead at Illinois
Masonic and a 32-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene in the 5000
block of North Winthrop Avenue.
Then, hours later, a spray of bullets in the South Shore neighborhood left
one man dead and two wounded, according to police, who corrected early
information that two people had been killed.
The three were shot about 9 a.m. near 75th Street and Exchange Avenue,
according to fire officials. The victims were found in the 2600 block of
East 74th Place and around the corner in the 7400 block of South Exchange
Avenue.
A 25-year-old man was taken to South Shore Hospital with a gunshot wound to
the head and was pronounced dead, according to police. A 29-year-old man who
police initially said had died was in critical condition at Stroger
Hospital with gunshot wounds to the back, police said. The third, a 50-year-
old man, was in good condition at Jackson Park Hospital and was expected to
be treated and released, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a police spokeswoman.
The man killed was later identified as Vuan Evans, 25, of the 3100 block of
East Cheltenham Place, according to the medical examiner's office. Evans,
who records show turned 25 on Saturday, was pronounced dead at 9:40 a.m.
The three were standing outside when they were shot, Lemmon said.
In the most recent nonfatal shooting, a 27-year-old woman was critically
hurt around 2:48 a.m. Thursday in the Morgan Park neighborhood on the Far
South Side, Gaines said.
The woman was outside in the 1600 block of West 115th Street when an unknown
attacker walked up to her and fired shots, Gaines said.
The woman was struck in the torso and was taken to Christ Medical Center in
critical condition, Gaines said.
About 12:15 a.m. Thursday, a 20-year-old man was seriously wounded in a
shooting around in the Oakland neighborhood on the South Side, Gaines said.
The man was shot in the lower back near 40th Street and South Oakenwald
Avenue, Gaines said.
He was taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Gaines
said.
Earlier Wednesday evening, two men were shot on the Far South Side, police
said.
The shooting happened at 8:30 p.m. on the 10500 block of South LaSalle
Street. A 20-year-old man was shot in the face and was taken to Christ
Hospital where his condition had stabilized. In addition, a 26-year-old man
was shot in the leg and his condition had stabilized at an area hospital,
police said.
Earlier, a 41-year-old man was injured after being shot at 1 p.m. on the
6800 block of South Ashland Avenue, police said. The man was shot in the
side and was taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition had
stabilized, police said.
