The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Freedom From Religion
Foundation have made an effort to end prayer at school events, but one group
of cheerleaders has a new routine that brings prayer back before football
games.
According to WATE-TV, the Oneida Special School district in Tennessee has
decided to do away with prayer before athletic events in an effort to avoid
legal action after receiving letters from the ACLU and the Freedom From
Religion Foundation.
School officials say they received a letter last fall from the ACLU
reminding them it is unconstitutional to hold school sanctioned prayer at
football games.
The tradition of saying a prayer over the public address system before
Oneida school games was over. Instead, the school instated a moment of
silence before games.
It was during that silence this month that cheerleaders came together and
recited the Lord's Prayer and got the crowd involved. |
