The U.S. manufacturing expansion revved up in August, according to a survey
released Tuesday by the Institute for Supply Management. The upbeat reading
adds to expectations of an acceleration in U.S. economic growth in the
second half.
The ISM's manufacturing purchasing managers index increased to 59.0 in
August from 57.1 in July. The PMI is at its highest level since March 2011.
"This is broad-based strength," said Bradley Holcomb, who oversees the
survey for the ISM.
Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected the latest PMI
to slow to 56.8.
Earlier Tuesday, data provider Markit said its own final U.S. PMI jumped to
57.9 last month from 55.8 in July. Output, new orders and employment all
gained. The Markit PMI is at its highest reading since April 2010. As with
the ISM, a Markit reading over 50 indicates expansion.

Treasurys Slip, Dollar Rises on ISM The ISM's read on August manufacturing
activity rises to 59, fueling a fresh bout of selling in the haven bond
market. Bond prices hit session lows, building on earlier price weakness
amid booming corporate debt supply. The dollar strengthens, pushing USD/JPY
just above 105 from 104.96 before the report. Fed chief Yellen's focus has
been on tame wage inflation and investors will focus on Friday's nonfarm
jobs report that will shape expectations on when the Fed will raise rates.
Ten-year Treasury notes down 17/32, yielding 2.407%, still close to the year
's lows. ([email protected]

U.S. Manufacturers Worry About Geopolitics In a conference call today, Brad
Holcomb, who oversees the factory survey for the ISM, says some respondents
expressed caution about geopolitical risks. In the comments in the August
report, purchasing managers mentioned eurozone and China as regions of worry
. Offsetting the global fears are comments indicating strong domestic demand
. ([email protected]

The expansionary readings in both surveys suggest the factory sector is
gaining momentum this quarter.
"The exceptionally strong ISM manufacturing report continues to suggest that
the economy remains on a steadily improving path, reinforcing our
expectations for sustained 3.0% growth throughout [the second half]," wrote
Gennadiy Goldberg, U.S. strategist at TD Securities, in a research note. The
U.S. economy expanded at about a 1.1% annual rate in the first half.
The ISM survey's subindexes show expanding activity last month.
The ISM production index rose to 64.5 in August from 61.2 in July. The new
orders index increased further to 66.7 after it jumped to 63.4 in July from
58.9 in June. The exports index increased to 55.0 from 53.0.
The production index is at its highest since May 2010 while the new orders
index is the highest since April 2004.
Labor demand in August held on to most of the strength seen in July. The
employment index was little changed at 58.1, from July's 58.2, which was the
highest reading since June 2011.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, manufacturing payrolls
increased solidly in June and July, led by hiring at auto makers. Mr.
Holcomb said last month's high ISM employment reading is consistent with "a
good, solid gain" in August factory payrolls. The BLS is scheduled to
release the August employment report on Friday.
The ISM's prices paid index eased to 58.0 from 59.5 in July. "It's fairly
quiet on the inflation front," said Mr. Holcomb.
U.S. manufacturers added to inventories last month. The ISM inventory index
rose to 52.0 from 48.5 in July.
Mr. Holcomb said one area of concern was geopolitical risks. A few
respondents mentioned worries about international issues or weaker demand
from abroad.
