Decatur, IL. Walgreens CEO, Gregory D. Wasson, announced that it plans to
move its corporate headquarters to Switzerland as part of a merger with
Alliance Boots, a European drugstore chain. The move will allow Walgreens
profits to be taxed a lower rate in Switzerland and reduce Walgreens taxes
in Illinois.
Walgreens plans the move, even though the taxpayers of Illinois gave it a $6
million tax credit over a period of 10 years, provided $625,000 in training
money and $875,000 in additional tax incentives.
Walgreens tax strategy is called “an inversion.” A U.S. company buys or
merges with a foreign company in a low tax jurisdiction, moves its
headquarters there, but continues to generate business and profits in the U.
S.
According to the New York Times, Neill Geiser, assistant director of Change
to Win Initiatives said, “It is unconscionable that Walgreens is
considering this tax dodge – especially in light of the millions of dollars
it receives from the U.S. taxpayers each year.”
Walgreens received $16.7 billion from Medicare and Medicaid last year.
Walgreens’ move will cost U.S. taxpayers about $4 billion over a period of
5 years. (Andrew Sorkin, “Renouncing Corporate Citizenship” N.Y Times,

Sorkin is a typical NY whining liberal. Perfect traits to work at CNBC. In
fairness, he did correctly point out the broken tax code is the real issue.
But he never points to the Federal government who are more interested in
their socialistic ideology than trying to grow to economy. Why blame
executives who are paid to make the best decisions for their shareholders.
What he missed tis that executives are paid to act and not just wring their
hands and criticize from the liberal sidelines. IF the congress and the
administration can't get common sense changes made, companies have to act
assuming they never will. After a while, you can only deal with the
realities in front of you, not on some coming attraction that never arrives.
When Apple wanted to repatriate some of their huge cash horde, they were
faced with getting taxed at 30% or incurring interest expense on a bond
offering under 2%. They chose to issue bonds saving 28% in expense. Any
executive or head of household with any brains, would have made the same
decision or be investigated by the SEC for malfeasance. Don't blame those
who have to lead and act. Blame the divisive administration and
congressional leaders who choose ideology instead of action. | n****g 发帖数: 14743 | 3 good decision.

它地方,对于努力工作的人来说,对于将来移民瑞士还有个可能。 | d*****n 发帖数: 754 | 5 上涨啊,省钱了。作为引进的外国公司,证明政府发展经济的业绩啊
