number of “involuntary” part-time jobs continues to grow, which makes what
happened at a 24/7 California call center, set up to answer questions about
ObamaCare, particularly ironic.
The Contra Costa facility was seeking to fill as many as 204 full-time jobs.
It drew some 7,000 applicants, no doubt because the prospects sounded good.
Job-seekers envisioned fair wages and benefits — including, of course,
health care.
No such luck. It turns out about half the jobs are only part-time. Which
means the workers, some of whom gave up full-time jobs, have to pay the full
cost of their health care themselves: between $600 and $1,200 a month for
singles, and $1,400 and $2,900 a month for family plans. That’s a heavy
burden when you’re making less than $20 an hour part-time, as they’ll be.
“I know you were led to believe you would be full-time, but things have
changed,” said one official. It’s not clear why that happened, but a
similar story has been taking place in the private sector across America.
And one reason for that is clear: ObamaCare.
The health-care law, you see, requires businesses with at least 50 full-time
employees to offer health-care coverage. So, many companies are deciding
simply to opt for part-timers to avoid the extra costs.
True, President Obama delayed this mandate a year. But businesses plan their
workforces in advance. Don’t expect to see better “underemployment”
figures anytime soon. | l******t
