on Poverty, we could pay off the national debt and have money left.
And many more poor children would have active, involved fathers in their
lives.
WASHINGTON — Another 2.6 million people slipped into poverty in the United
States last year, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday, and the number of
Americans living below the official poverty line, 46.2 million people, was
the highest number in the 52 years the bureau has been publishing figures on
it.
Democrats have lost their War on Poverty.
Since the beginning of the War on Poverty, government has spent $19.8
trillion (in inflation-adjusted 2011 dollars) on means-tested welfare. In
comparison, the cost of all military wars in U.S. history from the
Revolutionary War through the current war in Afghanistan has been $6.98
trillion (in inflation-adjusted 2011 dollars).* The War on Poverty has cost
three times as much as all other wars combined.

Service, June 29, 2010. The CRS report counts the cost of wars through
FY2010; the additional cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in FY2011,
at $159 billion, was added to the CRS figures.
