The Supreme Court’s ruling today on the Defense of Marriage Act is a loss
for big government, not for marriage. Let’s revisit.
The year was 1996 and I was a young college frosh, Democrat, and progressive
activist. Democrats campaigned on DOMA. Clinton, the new Kennedy-of-sorts,
was a fervent supporter, writing prior to the bill’s signing:
I have long opposed governmental recognition of same-gender marriages
and this legislation is consistent with that position.
Other notable supporters include current Vice-President Joe Biden, Senators
Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin, Harry Reid, and Patrick Leahy. (Here is the roll
call.)
Democrats , led by Clinton, also supported Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
The Log Cabin Republican group led the fight against both DADT and DOMA. |

主党人，只有一个共和党议员反对，剩下的共和党人全部支持。

an insult to many of his gay friends.[25] However, after Congress had
passed the bill with enough votes to override a presidential veto,[25]
Clinton decided to sign the bill into law in order to avoid the type of
political damage he encountered earlier in his presidency when he
underestimated the public's opposition to his attempt to allow gays and
lesbians to serve openly in the US military.[25]

History
Log Cabin Republicans was founded in 1977 in California as a rallying point
for Republicans opposed to the Briggs Initiative, which attempted to ban
homosexuals from teaching in public schools.[6]
The group initially proposed to name themselves Lincoln Club, but found that
name was already in use by another California Republican organization.[6]
Thus, the name Log Cabin Republicans was chosen as an alternative name.
1992 presidential election
The 1992 Log Cabin Republican convention was held in Spring, Texas, a
Houston exurb. The main issue discussed was whether or not LCR would endorse
the re-election of President George H. W. Bush. The group voted to deny
that endorsement because Bush did not denounce anti-gay rhetoric at the 1992
Republican National Convention.[7]

我看了很新奇，因为同性恋这种组织十有八九是民主党的基地
可是，发现了还有log cabin republican这样的好组织，
而且克林顿那个肉麻的话真的把我雷倒了

的上百名共和党人只字不提，只提民主党的支持。 等说到共和党时则是Log Cabin
Republicans领头反对DADT和DOMA，也真服了她了。共和党里是有一些人出于小政府和
个人自由的理念而支持gay right， 但毕竟是少数。

小政府胜利了，政府不能干预人民的生活和选择
这样说还有点道理

发帖数: 1936 | 20 同意。当年发起DOMA的Bob Barr就是因为后来觉得这和他的小政府的理念相悖，改变了
立场，变为支持同性婚姻，支持推翻他亲笔起草的DOMA。
要是连当初这个法案的发起人和co-sponsor （Rob Portman）都已经变卦了， 那也就
怪不了其他人改变立场了吧。
