The number of new unemployment claims increased last week, but the amount of
workers drawing benefits on a continuing basis dropped to its lowest level
since before the financial crisis took hold.
Initial jobless claims rose by 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 371,000 in the
week ended Jan. 5, the Labor Department said Thursday.
The data showed the number of continuing unemployment benefit claims—those
drawn by workers for more than a week—dropped by 127,000 to 3,109,000, the
lowest level since the week ended July 12, 2008. Continuing claims are
reported with a one-week lag.
The number of workers collecting continuing claims has decreased steadily in
recent years as fewer workers were able to tap into special emergency
benefit programs. Also, several government offices were closed for Christmas
during the reporting period, which can cause fluctuations in the data.
But overall claims figures are pointing to general improvements, said
economist Michael Gapen with Barclays Research.
"Whether viewed through weekly changes or over a longer period, trends in
jobless claims over the past two years have been sending a consistent signal
of a gradual healing in labor market conditions," Mr. Gapen wrote.
Factors including Superstorm Sandy, fiscal cliff fears and seasonal patterns
had distorted readings in the past several months, but economist Robert
Kavcic with BMO Capital Markets Economics said last week's numbers "look
like a relatively clean number."
The four-week moving average of claims, which smooths out volatile weekly
data, increased by 6,750 to 365,750 last week.
A separate Labor Department report Thursday suggest that the job market's
steady improvement may have stalled in November, as the 3.7 million job
openings at the end of that month was almost unchanged from October.
Meanwhile the rate of hiring and job separation also held steady.
"While most measures of employment show continued modest improvement in the
labor market through the end of 2012, the (job openings and labor turnover)
data ... have signaled some loss of momentum recently," said economist
Daniel Silver with J.P. Morgan Chase JPM +1.06% .
The government recently revised up November's unemployment rate to 7.9% from
7.8%.
Meanwhile, inventories at U.S. wholesalers rose in November, but the pace of
sales increased more rapidly, suggesting demand may have been stronger than
expected among retailers early in the holiday season.
U.S. wholesalers' inventories increased by 0.6% from October to a seasonally
adjusted $498.95 billion, the Commerce Department said. It was the fifth
consecutive month of rising wholesale inventory levels and was helped by
growing stocks of cars, furniture and petroleum.
Sales for wholesalers advanced 2.3% in November to $419.33 billion, largely
driven by durable goods. The gain came after sales retreated 0.9% the
previous month, according to revised figures.
Wholesalers account for about one-third of all business inventories in the U
.S., with manufacturers and retailers making up the rest. Businesses often
stockpile goods if they expect demand to rise, but they risk being stuck
with unwanted goods if orders don't come through.

The media... as always is misleading the public by distorting facts and
figures. Their endless love affair with our president is truly amazing. 70%
of the jobs created in the last year didnt require a college education. All
the "recovery" talk is nothing more than Americans having to settle for
minimum wage jobs that can't support a individual..let alone a family. Yet
the only story you hear from the media is how many jobs got created, not
what type of jobs.
Unemployment claims are down, this is a great thing.. according to the
media. When in reality people just exhaust their benefits and are forced to
take a job that pays less than their unemployment check provided.
The most important issue the last 2 elections (according to the public) has
been the ECONOMY. Yet it remains the ONLY issue not being talked about in DC
. I suppose the endless Sandy Hook tradegy is important than the welfare of
the entire country
Nothing being done about outsourcing jobs, no talk of immigration reform, No
talk of how NAFTA will eventually put everyone in this country on food
stamps.
I am neither a Dem or a Repub, I am disgusted with our government, and our
media.
It seems there are only 2 classes in America... millionaires.....and
minimum wage workers....but hey, America is "recovering".
You know why they want our weapons? It's not Sandy Hook, or Batman...It's
the fear of a armed American public finally waking up to the reality of the
country they live in.
But I'm just a crazy, radical who has misplaced his "rose colored glasses"
