Things are heating up this summer in both the political and theatrical
realms. Movie theaters are hit with my favorite kind of movies, superheroes
like Spiderman, Batman and the whole Avengers team. You also have Obama and
Romney in full campaign mode heading out to all their stops to conjure up
votes and rally their bases. Yet, what do superheroes and these politicians
have in common? You might be surprised by the connections.
Joss Whedon, the Director behind this summer’s hit the Avengers, was at
Comic-Con this week to promote his movie along with his other upcoming
ventures. He hadn’t prepared a speech and instead jumped right into
questions. A member of the audience reached out with a question in regards
to Whedon’s movies having a certain “Anti-capitalism” undertone to them
and how he would like to respond.
Whedon’s response:
“We are watching capitalism destroy itself right now,”
He added that America is “turning into Tsarist Russia” and that “we’
re creating a country of serfs.”
“We have people trying to create structures and preserve the structures
that will help the middle and working class, and people calling them
socialists,” Whedon said. “It’s not Republican or Democrat, conservative
or liberal […] it’s some people with some sense of dignity and people who
have gone off the reservation.”
Whedon sends the correct message but is wrong about the reasons.
We are watching capitalism collapse on itself right now but that is not
because the concept of capitalism is wrong or flawed, it is because we have
politicians in office that place regulations and standards that aren’t
based in capitalism into the system and then try to hold it to the same
level as what capitalism stands for. Of course it isn’t going to withstand
that kind of structure.
You don’t take a butcher from a butcher shop and place him into a bakery
with his butcher tools only and expect him to make a fantastic cake. The
butcher is out of his element and is using the wrong tools. This President
despises capitalism and tries to emulate the political policies of socialist
european countries. This is by design of course though, institute policies
under the guise of “Capitalism”, let it fall apart and then claim it doesn
’t work so you can put in place a european type of system.
Whedon also mentioned in the last part of his quote that the current
administration is just trying to “Help the middle and working class” and
that people just end up calling those politicians “socialists”. Well
Hitler was also just trying to help out a select group of people as well….
they just happened to have blonde hair and blue eyes, what is so wrong with
that!?
Diving even deeper into the political comparisons with superheroes,
apparently the new strategy for the Democrat party is to compare Romney to
this summer’s “most anticipated” superhero movie, the Dark Knight Rises (
Batman). You see, the message lately from the Obama administration is that
Romney destroyed jobs through his involvement with Bain Capital. The villain
of TDKR is Bane, a muscle-bound, venom (or in this case pain-killer)
breathing, bringer of city chaos and destruction.
Forget the fact that the DNC has a little spelling case on their hands (Bain
/Bane) and the fact that this message has already not resonated with the
American people thus far because it has been proven false (He left Bain
Capital two years before the collapse of the company and the loss of jobs),
apparently if you tell a lie enough times it appears as truth eventually.
Let me take a stab at this superhero comparison tactic and see what we can
come up with. I would like to point out that Romney actually has more in
common with Bruce Wayne. Who is going to argue the likeness between these
two tycoon millionaires that get involved in politics? Even Democrats have
mentioned that Romney is a good-looking guy, a staple feature of the
legendary Bruce Wayne. How about his alter ego Batman? Romney may not wear a
costume running around at night fighting crime, but has he had any heroic
moments? Well in 1996 Romney shut down Bain Capital operations and
transported employees down to New York to search for a fellow employee’s
missing daughter…and they found her. (1 point for Romney heroism)
I would contend that Obama has a few comparisons from the current trilogy of
Batman movies, most notably the Dark Knight, the second movie of the
trilogy. He actually has the traits of two of the characters within that
storyline. The first, the Joker played by Heath Ledger.
The joker was hell bent on creating chaos, pitting citizens against each
other in an attempt to flush out the Batman. Much like the political and
racial division this country has experienced since Obama took office in 2009
. There was also the Joker scene where millions of dollars stacked on
pallets, that he took from the local gangsters, had gasoline poored on and
then proceeded to light fire to it. Much like the wasteful spending habits
of this administration and their uncanny way of burning through taxpayer
cash to add to our national debt.
Obama and the Joker view capitalism the same.
Maybe he is like Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face. Harvey started as a good
intentioned politician/District Attorney but eventually became one of the
films enemies. Metaphorically speaking you could compare Obama’s two-
facedness with his telling the American people one thing (“Those making
under $250,000 will not see a tax increase under my administration”) to his
turning around and doing the opposite (an almost immediate large tax on
cigarettes and the passing of Obamacare, the LARGEST tax increase in
American history).
I find it most interesting that Obama’s connections to Hollywood are still
holding strong. Within the past couple months, Sarah Jessica Parker held a
fundraising dinner in Obama’s honor to benefit his campaign. Price of entry
was $40,000 per plate toward the campaign. In my opinion, Obama should be
paying these celebrities to show up, not the other way around. The
connection to Obama is more detrimental to the celebrities’ careers than
Obama’s.
The point here is that these Hollywood people have absolutely zero ability
to connect and relate with the actual middle class. If Joss Whedon had to
spend a year trying to survive on $40,000, with 30% taken out for taxes, I
believe he may be able to survive to Sunday. The Avengers was one of the
greatest movies I have ever seen Joss, let’s stick to the Directing realm
though.
As far as the DNC and this administration is concerned with their movie
comparisons, make sure you do your homework and carefully pick out your
comparisons because we can play the same game and make more relatable
comparisons from the same movies. |
