take a principled stand against the spread of disgusting and coarse language
invading our nation's political life.
Priorities USA Action, the unrestricted Super PAC that President Obama
opposed before he supported it, announced a decision Thursday about its
largest donation yet, a $1 million check from alleged comedian Bill Maher.
The laughmeister is famous on the left and right for calling Sarah Palin and
other conservative women "#$&*s," "$)+#&es" and "**&%ing #=+#
His chronic displays of such wit and comedic talent have caused the cable
channel to use Maher as late-night programming along with such cinema
classics as "Bikini Girls from the Lost Planet" and "Busty Coeds vs Lusty
Cheerleaders" featuring, we're told, real simulated sex acts and skilled
hair-tossing. So, anyone can understand Maher's popularity for a while every
time he gets a new show.
Anyway, the issue of coarse language didn't come up in the popular media for
some reason when Maher uttered his unprintable laugh lines about
conservative females. Because, well, you know.
But the issue of language has erupted in recent days because a radio talk
show host you probably never heard of, Rush Limbaugh, used the four-letter
word "slut" and "prostitute" to describe a young woman who told a
congressional committee that she needed upwards of $3,000 in government
funds during law school to acquire contraception as part of her health care
rights.
Naturally there was a huge media uproar, not over the woman expecting
taxpayers to underwrite pregnancy protection from her own intimate
activities, but over a conservative male stating that such an activist
seeking taxpayer funding for contraception in that quantity was "a woman of
loose morals," as the dictionary puts it.
Of course, this Limbaugh fellow had to publicly apologize for outrageously
suggesting something that so many of his 14 million listeners were already
thinking based on personal observations of people who acquire contraception
in bulk.
At the White House Thursday Obama's frequent spokesman, Jay Carney, was
asked if, as some women were suggesting, his Super PAC should return the $1
million to Maher, who never really got around to apologizing for calling
Sarah Palin and other conservative women "#$&*s," "$)+#&es" and "**&%ing #=+
#
Carney said that the president finds language denigrating women to be
without any doubt "inappropriate." Carney added that Obama, who gained fame
as a state legislator for decisively voting "Present" scores of times, had
come down this time firmly on the side of staying the hell out of this money
controversy. Especially, it seems, since it involves such a good-looking
chunk of change. |
